hot dog cart....tacky??

Im getting married 9/15/12, in my parents backyard.  It will be a very causal event with mostly family and a few friends. (100 guests) I really want to have a local hot dog vendor come in and just serve hotdogs and chips,  my sister thinks it is tacky?  Any feed back would be appreciated!!!!!

Re: hot dog cart....tacky??

  • That sounds kind of fun, and not tacky, but it's probably more complicated than you would think. You'd have to consider a lot of different dietary restrictions; celiacs couldn't have the buns, Vegan/vegetarians couldn't have the meat, anyone kosher would need a different kind of hotdog cooked on a different grill, etc.

I'd say it would be fine as long as other options were available.

I *really* like the idea, but I think you need a little more than hot dogs and chips.  Could the cart come and serve hot dogs and then you provide a nice variety of sides like potato salad, fruit salad, veggie tray, and dessert?  That would be more meal-like to me and would address the problem of people who don't like/can't eat hot dogs.

Another thing to think about is how fast can the cart serve 100 people?  You don't want everyone to wait in a 30 minute line!

  • I think that sounds adorable!!! It isn't classy but can be super cute if you get the theme right :)

But yeah, as others said, make sure you think of all logistics surrounding - do you get big tubs of ketchup, mustard and relish? Do you need plates? Are they paper plates? What do little kids eat? Do you then need forks and knives? Do you still have tables if you have a cart? Do people mingle and snack or sit down and then all get up and line up? Also, it's kind of hard to juggle a hotdog and chips and drink at the same time - so do you have standing tables? And hotdogs aren't too filling. . . I had a friend who had a beach wedding and hotdogs were served at like 11pm as the drunk munchie food. Also 100 people is a LOT for one cart - do you need two? And I have some family members who have quite the appetite. . . if you're not giving them a 3 course meal as they might expect, make sure you budget 3 or 4 dogs for some people ;)
  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone!  I think that I will go ahead and book it.  It is an early afternoon wedding, and here in my area at least, a full meal isn't provided at a wedding!  We normaly just do light snacks, so I think it will work out ok.  I will also be doing dips, cakes, pies and cookies... We really like sweets!!!
  • Fun and laidback. No need for like fish and steak. Have bbq.

  • LOVE IT. I totally wanted to do this for my wedding--but I figured an entire roasted pig would be enough....lol
