Courtesy Invite? What Would You Do?

Ok... So last year we were invited to an engagement party for my second cousin. Her mom emailed me and invited me. I had no interest in going, since I hadn't seen her since we were kids, however, she's engaged to an NHL player and before I even had the words out of my mouth FI said we'd be going.

Fast forward to now. I just received their save the date. I was hoping they wouldn't invite us so we didn't have to decline. But I know for sure FI will want to go to the wedding now too.

The dilemma I'm faced with now is with our guest list. Do we invite them since they invited us? If I invite them, am I required to invite her mother? What about her Grandmother (my Grandmother's sister?)

From what I've heard, my Second Cousin asked her Grandma to make her an invite list. I believe I was on that list. So I feel like its her Grand mother inviting us, not necessarily the Couple.

I'm stuck. I really don't want to add anyone to our list. I'm kinda hoping since we'll be getting married at the start of hockey season they wont come because he'll be away playing pre-season games so at that point its a courtesy invite and its more the gesture than actually wanting them there.

Re: Courtesy Invite? What Would You Do?

  • Weddings aren't tit for tat.  It's not necessary to invite them to your wedding, just because they invited you to theirs.  Go to their wedding if you want to, but don't feel obligated to invite them to your wedding.  Even if you do invite them, with the start of hockey season, I'm sure only your cousin would be able to attend anyway.
  • I don't have an answer for you, but which NHLer is it?????
    ;) sorry, I like hockey.

You aren't olbigated to invite them. If you were't planning to before you recived their STD I wouldn't now.

FWIW, we had no second cousins at our wedding. I haven't seen them since I was super little and probably wouldn't know them if I saw them face to face.

  • Courtesy invites have a way of coming back and biting you in the bum! So if you do not want to invite someone, don't.

If she's a lurker, I'm sure she'll be able to figure out you're talking about her. Just saying

    also I can't wait either, I'm SUPER excited :)

<div>Maybe, but putting a Name out there would make it that much more obvious. So I'm just going to avoid it! :)</div>

And, I totally understand  about wanting to keep names "hush hush". No worries.

  • My fiance can't wait for the NHL to return on (supposedly) the 19th and I have to admit that I'm pretty excited too. Now if only our favourite teams weren't rivals everything would be perfect!
