Smartphone question

H and I recently got with the program and got smartphones. I want to download our banks app so I can monitor our account. I have the internet where I am staying, but it is not secure bc I am just piggy backing on a wireless signal. So here is my question: is accessing your bank info on a smartphone considered secure? Thanks ladies.

I am not 100% sure but I do not believe it is. Since it is wireless or 3G I think everyone shares the same connection.

I'm sure with all the apps out there that they have made their best effort, but I would not use it except in an emergency as its much easier to hack than a secure connection.

Thanks girls. That was what I was afraid of. I guess I will just have to have H monitor the account where he is and keep me informed of the balance or use the phone to check every so often.

Missy, I believe some banks have apps that will text you your balance every purchase. I know chase and usbank do it, and it is set up through their bank so it is just a text that does not use the internet. You may be able to set it up by calling the bank.

Don't worry, it's safe. Smartphone internet doesn't work like computer internet... It's not possible at this point to break in.

Besides, bank apps only tell you your balance, they don't let you actually change anything... So even if you were to lose your phone, no one would be able to steal your information.

Unless you download anti-virus/malware nonsense (I really don't know what I'm taking about, FI is a software engineer and just did this to my droid tonight) I wouldn't access your account through an app. It's always safer to go to the website itself on your phone through the internet but ideally you do a scan/check thing.
