DJ vs. using my ipod playlist for the dance party. Suggestions?

I'm on a tight budget. I mean TIGHT. But I MUST have a dance party. luckily the venue I have has their oun sound system so I could create a playlist on my ipod and maybe have a friend monitor it or something.

Does anyone think that is a terrible idea? Has anyone has actually done this before and has suggestions on how to pull it off? AND I was hoping to get suggestions of any inexpensive DJ's in the metro area.

Thanks

  • I was at a wedding once that used an iPod for music, and honestly, it wasn't that fun. A good DJ pumps up the crowd and gets people on the dance floor and this wedding just didn't have that vibe. Kids kept changing the songs mid-song too, which was pretty annoying. When is your wedding? FI's friend is a DJ on the side and he's very reasonable. He's DJing our wedding June 9th, but other than that he may be available. PM me if you'd like his info!
  • FI and I almost did the exact same thing until we went to a few weddings.  We left and FI goes "Wow!  The DJ really controls the flow of the reception" and right there we decided DJ over iPod.  The dance is just such a HUGE part of the day (3-4 hours of the reception) that we decided we needed the personal touch.

  • Could you put some feelers out at a performance or digital art college?  That way it might be more inexpensive, you don't have a guest having to miss your reception and the student will have an oportunity for an intership?

One of my friends did the ipod thing at her ceremony and reception and it didn't go very well.  She ended up not having music for the ceremony.  It was still wonderful but I know she wished it would have all come together.

I'm not sure about specific DJ companies in the area but sometimes they have different levels of DJs and their expertise.  Maybe you can ask for a less experienced one and negotiate a smaller price?
  • I almost went with an ipod wedding one of my online friends said she had an ipod wedding where people danced. I chose a dj though because it seemed like a less stressfull choice. If you want an ipod wedding, i'm sure you can make it work. I got good quotes for djs from gigmasters.

  • I would ditto PPs and skip the iPod. There are several Djs that are super reasonable. Plus having a friend tasked with monitoring the iPod would totally suck for that person, what a boring night they would have! Not a job for a friend at your wedding.

  • FI was totally for the Ipod reception at first, but I have been to receptions that were Ipod only and the person running the ipod had to basically stand there the whole night!!  No fun for that person!!

We agreed to get a DJ, and are SO excited because now the stress of the evening is off us!!  Our DJ is going to meet with us to set up "do not" and "do" playlists, as well as make sure he has the songs we want for the special dances!!

  • make sure you get a DJ with experience when it comes to weddings. We went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago for my friend from highschool, and she had a friend that does a show at the local bar. She thought that DJs were the same and halfway through the night she confided to me that she should have gotten a wedding DJ.
  • I considered using an Ipod for our wedding because we have a tight budget. However, your DJ pretty much runs the night. If you don't have someone telling people to sit down or calling all of the wedding party back to their table things might not run very smoothly and things probably won't get done on time. Just something you might want to take into consideration.
