Honeymoon questions! Travel insurance?

Any recommendations for companies we should use? What are "must haves" that should be included? Do we really need the "cancel for any reason" option? Any tips are appreciated!

We are going to Negril Jamacia for 9 days and spending a total of around $5000. Thanks!

I'm not an expert, I have a travel agent and she recommended travel guard. I think the most important thing is being covered in case of a medical emergency. When I asked about this on the honeymoon board a lot of people recommended http://www.insuremytrip.com/

I paid $398 for our insurance, the trip cost is $8,000

  • We got cancellation insurance for our flight through the airline, just in case there was some kind of emergency. It may cost a little more, but it will save you a lot of stress if something comes up.

  • My parents were always big travellers and never got insurance for anything.  They rarely stayed somewhere where they had to pay up front though... we're not doing any travel insurance.

Sorry, butting in from another board - hope no one minds!

I really recommend travel insurance - I had never gotten it before our honeymoon, but with the trip taking place in March we were worried about a blizzard (who knew we'd have the warmest winter on record??). I've traveled before without it, but those times I was usually staying with a friend and other than a change fee for the airline ticket I wouldn't be out anything.  It was definitely worth the peace of mind though.  We had a policy that wasn't cancel any reason, but it did cover canceling for sickness or injury, weather, strike, quarantine,  jury duty, subpoena, terrorist act, passport theft, Trip delay of 50% or more, traffic accident en route, etc.  Which IMHO is pretty much any reason except I suppose "I changed my mind and called off the wedding."  It was $120 total for both of us, for around $2000.

Now, one thing to remember is you may not need to insure the entire $5000.  Check and see what the cancelation policy is for the resort and the airlines.  We factored in how much the airline would charge to change the flights and what was non-refundable.  Our hotel in Paris could be canceled up to 48 hours before so we didn't add that in.  The flat we rented in London, though, was pre-paid for the week and if we canceled we would get back the security deposit in full but only get back part of the payment for the week if they were able to find someone to rent it for the same time (which IMHO would have been unlikely).  We also tossed in the cost of a few things we had purchased beforehand, such as tickets on the Eurostar and for some tours.

So if the cancelation policy for the resort is, say, $1000 nonrefundable deposit and the airline ticket change fee is $100 per person you'd only need travel insurance for the $1200 instead of the $5000.

ETA: the company we used was Travelex.
