Introduction!

Hey Everyone! Just formally introducing myself. I recently got engaged on August 18th of this year - my fiance proposed in Vancouver :) We actually met though online dating - Match.com! Let me tell you people, it works :p We're both accountants, too.

Now to be honest, I have never been one of those girls who has always dreamed about her wedding. I don't know a THING about weddings (literally, it's bad), but I've been slowly learning! I'm hoping to get some help from you girls along the way, and share what I find as well Laughing

We recently set a date - June 9, 2012 at the Dallas Arboretum. I'm REALLY hoping we don't have an unseasonably hot summer like we did this year :( Our color scheme will be grey and yellow! I'm really excited about it, not sure at all how I'm going to apply it yet though.

Feel free to ask if and of you are curious about anything else! Best of luck to everyone, and happy wedding planning!

Hon, my sister's wedding was outside on 7-7-07 and it was MISERABLE. It's going to be hot outside in June, regardless.

I would just make sure you have a backup indoor plan JIC it is unseasonably hot or it pours on your wedding day. Are you having the reception at The Arboretum as well, I assume? If you are having your reception in one of their indoor spaces and your outdoor ceremony is short, that will help. My friend had her wedding ceremony outdoors in AUGUST this year and it was 105 degrees outside and a 45 minute ceremony. It wasn't as intolerable as I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't pleasant. Just keep your guests in mind, have a backup plan and you'll be find.

I LOVE the gray and yellow combo!

Welcome (officially) to the board :)

Welcome and congrats! This is a great place for wedding resources.

Word of advice - please please please do not have your wedding outside in Texas in the summer! It will be miserable for you and your guests - heat wave or not. Texas is hot in the summer.

    Happy posting!

Yeah, I don't know what you mean by "unseasonably hot." Summer is hot is summer is hot.

    Otherwise, welcome and congrats!

It's depressing that the majority of people I tell about our June 9th Arboretum wedding have been appalled :/

My fiance is SUPER picky. It's kind of unbelievable at times. He really wants an outdoor wedding, and he likes the Arboretum a lot (don't get me wrong, so do I). May was already booked when I asked the Arboretum about availablity, April is out of the question since they're doing a garden-wide Chihuly (I didn't know what it was when they told me either) installation, and August through October 15th is my fiance's busy season. June was the earliest available they had, and I'm very easily chilled so we ruled out anything after October 15th. The fiance really wanted to have the wedding in Dallas and not in a suburb since he wants to show his out of town guests around, but this morning he brought up Ashton Gardens.

What do you guys think I should do? We have already made a downpayment on the Arboretum but it's refundable within 30 days. I would feel like I'm starting from scratch if I tried to find another venue at this point. ugh!!!

Honestly - I would get your deposit back and rethink the venue. We can help with suggestions, but an outdoor wedding in June is just going to be miserably hot.

Yes. I've also heard a story about a venue who made a couple tent their wedding because it was so hot and the tent wasn't cheap.

I looked at Ashton Gardens and it was so pretty. I think if you want a June wedding that's as close as you can get to outside without being outside!

I would never have an outdoor wedding in June, sorry. Ashton Gardens is beautiful. I adore the Arboretum (I considered it myself). But not on June the 9th.

Porushsalta - don't get discouraged. I think it's great that you care so much about making your FI happy! (My H also picked our venue.) He's obviously open to other venues than the Arboretum if he tossed out the idea of the Ashton Gardens ... I'd discuss the weather concerns with him.

It sounds like he's mainly focused on showing a good time to his OOT guests. I'm not sure where they are from, but mine are from the midwest and this was their first time in TX. The wedding was in April, (I believe it was 95 or so on the wedding day, but it wasn't "HOT" by TX standards yet) and they were talking all weekend about how hot it was, how they couldn't stand to go outside for more than a minute, etc. They just weren't used to it at all. I think they were really relieved when the 15 minutes of family pictures outside were done and they could go inside in the A/C!

    I'm sorry.

I think the arboretum has indoor options that still give you the outdoor feel -- could you explore that? We actually considered having our reception in one of the buildings there, so you could do ceremony + reception inside that way, but still have great views and not have to worry about a) heat, b) rain, or c) bird poop.

Welcome and congrats on your engagement! I wish you luck on figuring out your venue. Outdoor ceremonies are beautiful (thats what we just had in Sept) but in Texas, summer is just brutal.

    Good luck! :)

This is where the FI & I are planning to have ours at Ashtong Gardens for both the ceremony & reception. I haven't gotten to view it yet in person cause we're in Austin, but I am 2 yrs out. I'm not sure what time you plan on having yours on that Saturday, but you may want to consider Saturday afternoon or morning because AG is EXPENSIVE for a Saturday night --- like they quoted me OVER $18K for 75ish people for everything. Their chapel looks beautiful and has large windows so it could maybe feel like you're outside. :) (minus the heat)

For Saturday morning, it was around $6k and Saturday afternoon was $8k-ish. We're having ours on a Sunday afternoon in November though so it was more reasonable. I've been speaking with Kelly Haught at AG.

Good Luck & Congrats on your engagement!
