fiance looking at you like your nuts for planning in advance? :)

Anyone else's fiance looking at you like your crazy for looking at caterers, etc a year out? I'm from Charleston, SC and caterers/photographers/etc book at least a year in advance. I keep trying to explain this to him, but he looks at me like I'm nuts. hahahha

  • He just probabably has no clue. My MIL thought we were nuts when we booked everything 18 months in advance. It wasn't until we took her to visit venues and they told us they were already booked that she got a clue. She didn't realize that in our area things full up 2 years in advance.  FWIW when we booked our March 2012 wedding in July 2010 we got the only Saturday in March left.  They also had a booking for 2014!

  • Same thing for me! I started booking vendors about 10 months in advance and my FI kept telling me that we had lots of time... that was until now when we are a few months away and he is happy to have everything done!
  • A year out is not unreasonable at all. We booked our venue at 18 months out and were not the only 2013 wedding by a long shot. And we booked our DJ and photographer around the 16 month mark and weren't the only booking for June 2013 for them at the time either. It really does vary by area, but if you live somewhere where things book fast then ignore his stares and definitely start booking vendors.

  • Thanks guys! I know I'm doing the right thing. It is just amazing the different perspectives sometimes :-) Gotta love it! :)
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has or is receiving these looks :)
  • Like HobokenBride said he probably just doesnt know how fast things book up. We had to book our venue 2 years before the wedding & the date we originally wanted was already booked so we had to switch our date. Things book up FAST. When we booked our photographer at 1.5 years out she was already getting people booking for 2014.

When FI and I got engaged, he originally wanted to get married 18 months from then.  So I said, ok, we need to start planning right now.  He was surprised!
We decided to take our time and in the end, will be engaged for 2.5 years.  We booked our venues about 20 months out.  We weren't the only ones looking at that date, either!
  • My FFIL thought I was nuts for booking stuff 1+ yr ahead of time, now with 4 months to go, our first choice for RD is all booked up and we're looking for back up plans.  If only I had been in charge of that...

  • We booked our venue a year in advance, and we got the last Saturday available for the summer of 2012. You are smart to think ahead!
  • You can let him know that this mob booked a photographer in Feb 2008 for a May 2009 wedding for her DD.  They only had 1 2009 opening left in Feb 2008.  Yeah, they were married in the capital city, but we aren't that far off norm.  Things REALL Y do book that far in advance and he should thank you because you will probably get better rates!
  • We booked 18 months in advance. We snagged the last Saturday in September at our venue. At 18 months the DJ I wanted was booked already, too. No harm in starting early!!

  • Siobhan, get used to it. My husband is that way about all advance planning. If I have to hear, I'll think about it, or We'll see, one more time, I'm going to scream. Of course we file our taxes on April 16. Good luck dealing with it for the next fifty years.

  • We booked our venue a month ago for our July 2014 wedding- we were told we're the first 2014 booking there, and I felt a little silly for doing it early... until I remembered that we got our first choice venue on our first choice date. We're looking at photographers now

  • My FI isn't a planner, but I am so he didn't really question the timing or anything, but he had NO idea what all went into a wedding.  When we looked at venues, he thought the quotes they gave us included everything.  And I mean literally everything.  Dress, tux, flowers, DJ, photographer, officiant, decorations, food, cake, beverages, etc.

He told me that since those things were mentioned at the back of the packets, that he thought they were included.  You know in the "we like and recommend these vendors" section.  Good thing I was in charge of the budget or we'd be in big trouble!

Ha ha, it sounds like almost no fiances are planners. Mine was also appalled that I wanted to book the venue and photog 10 months in advance. I guess he just wanted to digest the whole engagement thing for even longer. But it was the last summer wedding date our venue had available, so I'm glad I ignored him, and he is glad too, now. Although he still doesn't see why just hiring a wedding planner to do it all for you three months in advance isn't feasible...
