TMI question

I posted this on the FB thread, but I'll posy it here too. I have a TMI question (this goes off of yesterdays TMI question on the board): For those of you who are switching from Birth control to Natural Family Planning, have you discussed it with your Drs? I want to do NFP, but I'm on the pill to control ovarian cyst and some other things, where my Dr said it wouldn't be healthy for me to do it. What are you NFP ladies doing?

Re: TMI question

  • I havent discussed it with my midwife yet... but she has always been very open to my bc options. She never tells me what I *should* do.... but she will tell me what I shouldn;t do... if that makes sense. I would go to a midwife if you are considering NFP and also, if you could find a couple who practices it, that would be very helpful. My midwife is at Gundersen in LaCrosse.... PM if you want her contact info :)

  • Dani, a lot of times when it comes to BC "fixing" things, what it really does is mask the symptoms rather than offer a permanent solution to the problem.  The pill is way too over prescribed to people as a solution.  Did your doctor do any sort of hormonal tests or anything?  I recommend finding out if your doc is NFP friendly (there are websites with lists, usually linked off your local Catholic diocese that you can check out, even if you're not Catholic).  I recommend going to one who is NFP friendly if yours isn't, because a lot of times they can give you the second opinion you need to maybe take the non BC route.
  • I too am on BC for ovarian cysts.  I haven't spoken to my doctor yet, but we aren't going to start planning a family for at least a year to year and half.  I would definitely talk to your doctor though before changing anything.  I had two cysts removed when I was 15 and have been on bc ever since to keep me from ovulating and more cysts forming.  Your doctor should be able to tell you what is healthy for you to avoid such occurances (if that is what you suffer from).  The cysts themselves were terribly painful but you also don't want to inhibit the ability to have children if they grow back.

  • Birth control might not "fix" the problem, meaning it won't cure the reason you may have cyst. When a woman ovulates all of us create a sort of cyst before we release an egg. i would def talk to your Dr before you stop your BC. If you stop the pill there could be high chance you could develop a cyst since BC essentually prevents ovulation. That's why your Dr does not think it is safe for you to stop your pill. I do not know how serious your conditions are. But if and when you go off the pill you will ovulate and cyst could form. I have nothing against BC or NFP, everyone's body is different. I wish you the best of luck in your family planning!

I'm a firm believer in ALWAYS talking to your doctor before altering any prescribed medications  - period.  Especially since you were put on "BCPs" for reasons other than preventing pregnancy.

The fact that you mention " where my Dr. said it wouldn't be healthy for me to do it" makes me think you've already had a chat about this with your Dr.  Is your Dr. concerned about you stopping your BCPs? Or is the concern in the NFP?  Either way, it sounds like you're
uncomfortable with the info you have.  I would look for a second opinion.
