Eyelashes question!

Sorry ladies, but it has officially hit me that I have under two months to figure out what I need to do for my makeup and I have a LOT of questions.

I have really, really long eyelashes, so I don't want them to be longer, but I do want them to be thicker/more dramatic. I've tried Lancome "doll" mascara and it just seemed a little clumpy (but that could just be the woman who put it on). I was wondering anybody had any suggestions to emphasize them more without them being clumpy or making them so long that they round back and touch my face (like the Lancome lengthening mascara did).

I tried fake eyelashes for Halloween last year but it felt like I had a furry animal on my lids so I took them off before I left the house.  Did I just get the wrong kind of lashes, so maybe I should try that again with a less-full pair?

Also, when you apply mascara, do you put on multiple layers? Or just once and that should do it?

I only think I'm (and by "I'm", I mean my friend who can actually do makeup) going to do foundation, mascara, a liquid liner, a little light eyeshadow and some kind of natural looking lipstick.  So would it look unbalanced to have eyelashes that stand out a lot?

Re: Eyelashes question!

  • I also have a decent length of eyelash. And I noticed when i try to make them 'fuller'with mascara i just make them clumpy.  I had my make up trail today and she put fake lashes on me and they were driving me crazy for about 10 minutes. The MUA said once the glue dried they would feel fine. And they totally did!!! I love how they look and can hardly feel them on me. Maybe try the fake lashes again, and maybe not as full as the ones you previously tried on.

  • I'm so glad you replied! That helps a lot. I'm going to go out tomorrow to see if I can find some different lashes.  I don't think I kept the ones I had on for 10 minutes (MAYBE three because they came off) so it could be that I just wasn't used to them and they weren't dry.
  • You also need to practice with putting them on correctly.  If they aren't sitting right, they will feel funny and bug you the whole time.  Watch youtube tutorials to help you out.

As for your makeup, I think it sounds very pretty.  And if you don't wear makeup usually, then that sounds like the perfect amount of makeup for you.  Just get a good long lasting foundation.  I think having longer lashes with more simple makeup will really make your eyes pop.

  • You may want to try the individual falsh lashes. They will help fill out your eyelashes instead of making them longer.

  • Thanks ystaalenburg! And no, I don't wear makeup on a regular basis, so this is all a super huge departure for me and I'm learning a lot!
Csweaney, exactly how much skill does that take? It sounds like my worst nightmare.
  • You should add blush so you don't look washed out in the pictures.

I use maybelline great lash.  It helps to wiggle the brush right at your lashline.  That makes them look thicker closer to your eyes

Becky, as a photographer, my take on make-up can be different from others. Given that you don't wear much make-up normally, adding too much won't look like you in photographs. However, brides generally want to look like them at their absolute best, which happens pretty easily, given the day, but does require a bit of make-up to translate in photos. Long lashes (lucky girl) and eyeliner IMO require at least neutral shadow. Neutral, not minimal. Everything should balance. Don't be shy with neutral colors. They will look amazing with long lashes, and its almost impossible to overdo. I suspect you are the under-do type:) Stick with matte shadow, or the mineral kind with a slight sparkle. NO 'frosts'. Very bad things happen with flash photography and frosty eyeshadow. That goes for blush too. Many brides overdo the blush to keep from looking washed-out. If you were on stage getting hit with blazing video lights that applies- not on your wedding day. A good photographer won't wash you out, but a little blush goes a long way with a pro camera and good lighting technique, whether natural or flash assisted(almost all weddings require both). My advice, treat yourself to a make-up application/lesson sometime soon to get more comfortable. In our town the MAC people rule at application and education. Just brace yourself, you will want to buy everything they show you how to use. But if you do and follow their advice, your make-up won't budge! And get your photographer involved. Ask them. All my brides ask me. I will take pictures of applications if that's what it takes to get it right for them on their day. Fake eyelashes that are a natural length sound like a good idea, but practice, practice. I have put them on my brides too. Its easier than putting them on yourself, so maybe you and your MOH could play with it. The key to getting the glue to stick is to put the glue on the lashes(one side), count to 25 for the glue to get a bit tacky, then apply starting with the middle and outer edge. Push them tight to your lash line, finish with the inside. That's what works for me. Get a great foundation, easy on the powder-translucent good stuff only(or risk white face with flash). Go on the natural side with the lipcolor. Frost is generally ok on the lips. Finish with a gloss over it. Tell your MOH it is her duty to carry your lip color and gloss and check you for refreshing needs. I've been known to carry that too;) After all, where the bride goes, I go. Making her look fabulous is my job too. Have fun with the whole make-up thing. Enlist some help. Just don't wait until the last minute or forget to see how it looks in pictures. You will look great!
  • Thanks for the tips! I'm kind of tempted to go to the other local mall that has a Mac studio (although its an hour away) to see what their take is on everything.
I totally forgot blush! I hate the idea of wearing it, but I've seen what lack of blush and too much blush looks like, so I really need to get that portion under control.
I'm trying to get my makeup bought in the next week so that I will only have to do trial runs with my friend in July leading up to the 30th.

My biggest fear about makeup is not looking like myself.  My everyday "look" is wearing my FI's old, outgrown jeans and a t-shirt... I don't want to walk down the aisle and have him not recognize me.
