Washington-Seattle

Where are you getting married?

I'm new, but figured I'd do a fun introduction post.

My most recent headache has been a last minute venue change after coming to the realization that my old venue just wouldn't work in the case of rain without serious expense.

We're getting married in late August at Moorehaven in Mukilteo.

Hey I just looked at the Moorehaven. I actually really like that. Would you mind sharing price with us? And do they allow off-site catering?

The owner has a child who goes to my FMIL's school and it was the FMIL who initially suggested it after hearing that the woman had just bought it.

She wanted $4000(for a saturday) when I first spoke with her, required their caterer, buy booze from them, etc. It was not something that I could afford (we're hoping to do the whole wedding for 6 grand). I called them as a last ditch effort after my brief existential meltdown and it turns out they're not doing as much business as expected, and their catering contract didn't work out, and they haven't gotten a liquor license yet, so all of the weird expenses went away.  Plus they decided to charge low prices for the first year to "get the word out" and whatnot, so $1500(paying full in April has a $500 discount!!!) gets me the venue, tables, & chairs, I need a banquet permit and event insurance, but that seems to be fairly run of the mill.  There's a church that's pretty much never in use across the street from them that has ample parking.

The catch is that it's not specifically a wedding venue, they're a water garden supplier, so there are a couple dilapidated greenhouses on the property, and some fish hatchery looking ponds near the entrance.  Luckily the whole garden area is gorgeous, and for the price, it's hard to beat.

There's a house with a recently remodeled kitchen (it's gorgeous, not that it really matters) on the property that we also got so it helps with some of the logistical issues with most garden type venues and the preparation of food.

My original venue was the grotto at St Edward State Park.  It's a cute private area, but it's a little tight and there's no way to deal with 80 guests and rain without renting a $1200 tent., plus setting up auxiliary parking ($3/car, min 50 cars) renting tables/chairs, and trying to come up with a way to get electricity to the area.  And I thought that when spring came around they'd maintain it a little better.

Sorry about the venue issues, but it sounds like you've got a better option set up now, so it worked out for the better!  I called St Edwards a year ago to get info and they really wern't very helpful.  I get that they're park rangers and all, but seriously, I don't know what it is with government agencies (parks and rec depts, etc) but they're the pits when it comes to trying to rent a venue.  Came across an issue with the place I wanted to rent for our RD, but oh well.  I think things will work out better with what we're doing. :)  Your new venue looks beautiful!

Your venue looks lovely! In fact, I bet some of your guests will be like me and actually like better that it's a real functioning garden. Dilapidated greenhouses mean it's in use. :) Looks darling and you'll have so many photo opportunities for variety there!

We're getting married at a Seattle park and having the reception at Sunset Hill Facility.

    Welcome!

Tamra - I'm so jealous!  We tried to book the Dragonfly Retreat.  It looks gorgeous.  In the 18 hours between talking to the woman who owns it and my FIML and fiance going to go see it, our date was booked!

We were originally thinking about using ST Edwards State Park as well because I often hike there and we like the history of it, but FI decided to invite the world (lol) so the ballroom wasn't going to hold enough people. So, we asked the park ranger on duty about any chapels nearby (FI and I both wanted to get married in a church), he suggested Bastyr University which is on of the state park property, we drove over, walked in the chapel and were sold. So, we didn't bother to look at any other venues and are super excited about Bastyr.
