Am I the only one

...who thinks that medical advice should be left to doctors, and legal advice should be left to lawyers?

I don't post a whole lot because my job is insane and doesn't leave me with much time, but I really do love and apprecaite how honest you ladies always are. if I have a question about invitations, guest list, ceremony, etc, I know I can come here and get great advice.

However, if it involves my health or any kind of legal situation, I am going to find a more appropriate, professionally trained person to assist me.  Annnnd I would like to kindly suggest to you all to do the same, for your own sake.

That's all.

  • As I said below - I am not a doctor but I play one on the knot.

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

  • There is a difference between getting opinions and seeking treatment.  I'd have no problem asking my friends for suggestions or opinions, but if I think it's really serious I'll of course see a doctor.

I don't have many friends to ask opinions here, so I sometimes to come to my knot friends.

  • Did I miss something? Did someone just diagnose a communicable disease on here?

  • I think sometimes people post medical/legal type questions because people have been through the same thing and it can save them money and wasted energy.

For example, my fiance went out drinking and woke up the next morning and said he could feel his uvula touching his tongue, I googled it and saved us an ER trip. Not everything is worth the co-pay/deductible, or a lawyers retainer fee.

  • Oh, I see the thread now. Yeah, I think I would check w/my friends or family (or here) to see if anything rang a bell medically, then go to the doctor if it's serious.

  • If you ask a general question, than I'm okay with that.

For exampl,  I found out I had a cysts and had a few days from being diagnosed until I saw the a doctor.  I just was wondering if anyone else had them and what their experience might have been.  Very general.

Now when  I started having the bad cramps, I did not come here for advice first.  I made a doctor's appointment.

Asking a bunch of people on a wedding website what they might be causing dizziness is odd to me.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I mean, I get wanting to hear other people's experiences and how they dealt with it...but I think that can be done AFTER a diagnosis is given from a doctor, so you're sure it's even the same thing that you're dealing with.  But that's just me.

  • I don't ask for this type of advice here, and I never give advice beyond perhaps sharing a similar experience. But, people are free to do as they wish. I don't think it's the best idea.

Every time I see a medical-related post that someone is asking because they don't want to / can't afford to pay the fees or co-pay for a doctor's visit, I'm sad.

  • I think asking for opinions, or some direction, on TK isn't a big issue. There are lots of ladies on here from different backgrounds who give great advice on all sorts of things, so reading medical/legal/career/etc questions and answers doesn't bother me at all.

This board is much more than a wedding planning board.

  • I do get that a lot of the people on here have grown close and it is more than  a wedding forum to a lot of you...I didn't mean to make it seem otherwise.  I know this board can be a great source of support to people going through a tough time, and that's awesome.

But there are still some things that I think are better left to professionals.  That's the only point I was trying to make.

And on that note, I am off to get ready for bed a bit early.  Goodnight!

  • I don't mind people asking, as long as they take it with a grain of salt and realize the most appropriate place is consulting an actual doctor or lawyer. And that even the real lawyers on TK can't give 100% accurate advice on here, due to differences in state law and the off-chance they may themselves get in trouble.

  • Yeah, I actually blogged a little bit about this tonight.  I absolutely think legal questions are for lawyers and medical questions are for doctors.

I don't mind stuff like, "I have a cold, what's your favorite home remedy" because, well, that's about experience.  But I've wanted to tear my hair out here when people post stuff asking for legal/medical advice and people GIVE it that aren't lawyers/doctors.  I've seen blatantly wrong legal advice given here, and yeah, that's not cool.

It's hard to get a JD or an MD for a reason.  Leave it to the pros.

  • I completely agree :(  I understand why people do it, but as someone in the medical profession it is scary to see. Your health is not something to risk.
