Belize in May

Has anyone been?  I've been researching Belize for our honeymoon but have mixed feeling about going in May.  The travel guides say May is near the start of rainy season but can also be a great time of year in terms of deals.

TIA for your help!

Re: Belize in May

  • We went to Belize for vacation in mid June last year. It was great!! It only rained twice while we were there, each time only about 15-30 min... they were typical tropical rains, where it rains really hard and then stops. The weather was great, 90s, humid, very tropica weather (it gets dark after 6 pm already)l. We stayed for 5 days on the mainland to check out the the mayan ruins, jungle, etc... and then flew over to San Pedro - it is on one of the cayes. It's beautiful there! We would love to go back there in a heart beat.

  • I wouldn't worry about going at the very start of the rainy season, you should be fine. FI and I went in October of 2008- they had just received record amounts of rainfall and experienced a ton of flooding. So much flooding, in fact, that the hotel (which was a 2-hour drive from the airport) was unable to send their shuttle to pick us up. A flight attendant came up to FI and I when we landed in Belize City to tell us that instead, the hotel had had to arrange for a puddle jumper to fly us to our destination because the roads were so flooded.

It also rained for portions of the day for several days of the trip. But we just told ourselves it was all part of the adventure, and we didn't let it slow us down. We had to juggle our schedule a bit, but we still got to do all of the activities we wanted to, and despite the rain got to enjoy some lovely weather as well.

Go and have a wonderful time! :)
