So freakin weird (warning, may be TMI)

First off, Hi everyone!  I haven't been on in about a week or so, but I'm home sick today so I have some Knot time :).  So I had the worst day ever yesterday, scared the crap out of me actually.  I know some of you have medical backgrounds, so it might sound familiar to you, but I had never heard of it before and didn't know what the hell was going on.  When I woke up yesterday, I was perfectly fine.  I started doing my hair (like I do everyday), I flipped my head over to put serum in it.  When I stood back up, I felt dizzy.  Well, the dizziness didn't go away.  Instead the room started spinning out of control.  I had a shooting pain up the left side of my neck into my head, and I started vomitting about every 5 minutes (there's the TMI).  I was freaking out and wanted to go to the ER, but I don't have health insurance.  After about an hour things calmed down a bit.  The room was still spinning, but I figured out that if I laid on the left side of my head it made me feel a little better.  In the afternoon I got in to see my primary doctor and apparently I have Vertigo.  I googled it and was exactly what I went through!  I feel a lot better today, but I still feel like I'm in a funhouse when I walk around (it's not fun).  Just thought I'd share because I know a lot of you are bored at work, and I thought this was the weirdest thing ever.

I'm so sorry Athena!  I hope you feel better.  I don't know much about vertigo, but I had always thought it was usually caused initially on by some sort of incident (car accident, near an explosion, fall)... then could be brought on by things like you mentioned, flipping your head up or down when doing your hair, getting on a boat, pressure changes on an airplane... things like that.

Did they give you any meds?  I know they have come a long way with medication and hopefully gave you something to keep it in check.  Can't have you wlaking around with messy hair, ya know?

Monica - my dad has vertigo that stems from a brain tumor, but I don't think there is always a definate cause like that. Or at least not one that can be pin pointed.

Athena - hope you are feeling better, I know it can be a scary experience. Just be careful to not make any sudden movements, especially with your head.

I think it was actually a combination of things that caused it.  I fell asleep on the plane on the way to Mexico with my head slumped over.  My neck has been hurting me for 2 1/2 weeks now :(.  That with the quick motion of flipping my head over could be the cause.  I did tell the Dr. about my neck while I was there.  He felt around and said I had spasms in my neck (I got muscle relaxers for that).  I got a prescription to help with motion sickness/dizziness to take 3 times a day.  It will help get my balance back and also a prescription for nausea.  I don't ever want to flip my head over to do my hair again :).

My mother and grandmother both had one of those. No fun and I'm very sorry it's hard to see them go through it :hugs: I know it can be rough.

I have vertigo, and it can be brought upon by many things. Sometimes I get it after I've been sick. The Dr. I saw gave me exercises to do that help it, but you have to do it when the vertigo is full on. I don't vomit like you do, but I def get nauseous and my head spins. I usually feel better after eating and drinking water. The Dr. said water or (any fluids really) help.

Um Rollercoasters and other rides do not help.

It also can be brought on with slight head movements like the one you described.

The earthquake we had last week, um that did not help me one bit!
