Premarital Counseling

Hello Atlanta brides!! My FI and I are starting our search for our premarital counselor.  Can any of you recommend a good one?  And do you feel it really did/is helping you? My FI is very nervous about starting this process, but I am hoping it will be a great tool for us in the future.

I'm getting married a good ways east of town, so I can't recommend anyone, but I can offer my opinion on it.

FI and I felt like we didn't need it, but the pastor requires it and we figured it couldn't hurt. Every single issue we discussed  in counseling, we had discussed before (sex, children, religion, budget, etc), but the pastor assured us a lot of people wanting to get married have not. That is crazy to me...

Anyway, it definitely was not a bad thing. FI is also a little shy about discussing personal things, but since you are looking around, just find someone with experience and who is easy going. I am also of the opinion that seeing someone with a medical or counseling degree is a great thing, rather than just someone who is a member of the clergy. Our pastor has a degree in psychology, so that was enough for me, but we weren't adamant about having it done. If we were, I would have inisisted on seeing a secular counselor.

Ditto PP. It isn't a bad thing at all (especially for me but that's another story all together) it really depends on why you're going and what you're looking for.

    Anywho, check your DM.  :)

I am looking for a counselor and an officiate! We are new to the area so we are looking online for everything.

I agree my FI is nervous about going but I feel like it can't be a bad thing. It can only make our relationship stronger.

We are looking in to it too... if you have health insurance, they usually include counseling services (for any type of problem) and will pay for your pre-marital counseling. I'm starting with investigating/interviewing providers that are covered under my policy. Also, a male co-worker of mine who has been married for 20 years recommended group classes (I know, sounds weird right?). Basically you have homework each week and talk about more general things as a group (not super-private matters). I'm not completelyt sold but he said they found it very good.

He is a great and personable man.  We loved him!

I've heard that the premarital counseling at Perimeter Church in Johns Creek is wonderful! We are looking into siging up for it also. Registration opens on Dec 5th and there are only 25 couple slots. It is a 9 (maybe 10) week course every Sunday from 4:30-6pm. Best of luck!
