$100 for Tasting??

I've heard that some caterers are charging for food tastings, which I completely understand.  However, I came across a caterer who is charging $100.  They did state the money will go towards our event IF we book with them.  That seems a little excessive to me, however, I would love to hear other opinions or quotes.

Thanks

Re: $100 for Tasting??

  • I am looking at 6 different catering companies... yes I know that is crazy, but it is by far our biggest expense. I have two that are $100, one that is $25, one that is $50, and the other two are free. In my book the two that are free get bonus points before meeting them even, but I want to ensure that I am getting the best deal.

I think it's crazy, but I guess when times of hard... this is what happens.
  • If you haven't booked with the venue, I think it's normal and understandable that they charge for a tasting as they don't want random couples just booking a tasting for a free meal.  There are lots of venues that won't even offer a tasting until you ARE booked with them.  If you have already contracted with the venue, I would think the tasting should be either free or as you said have the charge applied to your final bill.
  • Our venue offers us a free tasting for six after we booked with them.

  • I saw it for one venue we were considering.  We didn't end up doing it because we just didn't love them enough to risk the $100.  And we figure that if they are nickel and diming us now, how will they be after we book?  Our final top contenders either offered free tastings or were $50 or less.
