Dance lessons.......

Here's my dilemma.......we went to my 20-year high school reunion a couple weeks ago.  I was really surprised the my FI didn't get up to dance at all.  I did a few line dances and had fun with that, but when the DJ played a slow song (the only one the whole evening), my FI didn't even make the slightest move to get up and dance with me.  We sat there during the whole time.  It really bothered me.

Anyways, on the way home, we were talking about it and he sounds really self conscience about dancing.  Wants me to teach him the line dances that I know, etc. I asked him about dancing at the reception and he seemed really uneasy.  He made a comment about not knowing how to dance, like two-step or waltz or whatever.  So, I'm thinking that investing in dance lessons before the wedding is a good idea.  I wouldn't mind learning a few "ballroom" dances either.......I think it would be fun.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

i used sharon with http://take-me-dancing.com/ ....she taught a very basic-basic in her "first dance workshop"...i think it was worth it just to get the basics down, but there is absolutely no flair the style, so you'll have to add your own. it was $40.

her studio is "closed for remodel", but has been for almost a year (according to the website)..i would email and see when it's back up, since you still have 1 year to go, you'll be fine if she actually opens up!

she does private lessons too, and i heard she's really good with that. the group first dance class was good-enough, but no fancy-schmancy moves.

also, i would say your FI was probably shy about dancing because he didn't know anybody at the reunion...my H is NOT a dancer. he's the definition of wall-flower, really, but he had a great time on the dance floor of our wedding. what he liked best was having all our friends and family around..maybe that will help your FI be more comfortable.

I used Vanessa with www.balorico.blogspot.com shes great!

We got 15 lessons and it was worth it. We learned the waltz for our first dance, and since we had so many lessons we were able to learn the salsa and tango as well. Now when we have been going to other people's weddings we were able to dance well as partners rather than grinding up on each other... it was totally worth it and my fi had no dance expierance at all!!!

We used Maliah maliah_ann@hotmail.com for our lessons.  We seriously both could not dance - and she helped us out a ton.  She was totally patient with us and listened to us too.  When it came to our first dance, i totally wasn't nervous thanks to her!

we used Katie Lake (http://katielake.com/) and I absolutely loved her.  DH bought us dance lessons for my birthday one year and we went back to her to choreograph our first dance because she was so great.

Hey so besides being a fellow seattle knottie I also own a ballroom dance studio in bothell. The studio website is www.abdanceinstitute.com .   Do you have a song picked out for you first dance? Make sure it is a song that is special and means something to both of you. Next you need to decide if you want a choreographed routine or if you would rather just learn to some basic social dance skills. There are benefits and draw backs to both. Also make sure that you wear your shoes you plan to dance in at the reception to your dance lessons. Where ever you do go for lessons be sure your instructor knows the type of dance floor you'll be dancing on, the size of the dance floor, the type of music set up you'll have (live band, dj with professional equipment, or ipod hookup provided by the venue), the style of dress you have and how heavy and difficult/easy it is to move in, and of course how much time you want to spend on preparing you and your FI for your first dance.
I hope these tips will help! Happy Dancing :)

  • Hi, I am Shannon
I am THE WEDDING Dance Specialist in Seattle since 1992.
You will be discriminating with everyone else you hire for your wedding, you should be as picky with your dance instructor. There are other companies that have copied my website and my packages. They can't copy my teaching style. I am a revolutionary!

JUST SAY NO TO BOX STEPS !! Boxes are squares !! Bodies do not move in squares! Boxes should NOT go with every song!!! They are not natural movements! Boxes do not teach people how to dance or lead or follow ! Stop the box!!!

There are no hidden costs or time wasting sales pitches on your lessons. I am up front with my prices and everyone gets the same deal. I will NOT try to sell you contract memberships or "included" groups and parties. Some places offer cheap introductory specials, These are NOT designed to teach you to dance, they are a sales procedure. Donot waste your time with these. They might turn your man off of dance lessons with their old fashioned dances and car sales pitches. DO NOT go to GROUP classes first!! Seriously,,, this could affect your dancing with your husband for the rest of your life. Read my FAQ page, for the answer to why no groups.

Of course other dance studios will take your money but that doesn't mean they really want you to learn to dance in so few lessons.
I have watched other teachers try to teach a Rumba or a Waltz even if it doesn't match the music. It is painful for me to watch the looks of disappointment on their couple's faces as they don't get it. I have seen to many videos of couples that look like they are trying so hard that it is almost painful. Certainly not an enjoyable memory.
I always bring my sense of humor to the lessons! Feel free to call me for a phone consultation. I am very experienced in all dances and most types of music. It is my goal to listen to you and adapt to find a dance style that is suitable for your personality. I will not try to make you into something you are not. I especially enjoy working with fun couples and making partner dancing a great way for them to show off their teamwork.

    Sincerely,
    Shannon Knauss
