Tipping dance instructor?

We've been taking dance lessons and I was wondering if we should tip our dance instructor? I assume yes, but how much? We took five private lessons, plus a bunch of group classes, and the total amount we paid for all of that was around $400.

Re: Tipping dance instructor?

  • I have never heard of tipping a dance instructor?  I took dance as a kid and I know my mom didn't tip them, so I wouldn't.

  • Ok, I wasn't sure. I would hate for it to be expected and then not do it!

  • We're taking dance lessons right now. I would have never thought to tip the instructor. They are getting paid for it, plus we're spending the same as you! I wouldn't tip them. Maybe send them a photo later of you dancing.
  • I wouldn;t tip them either...$400 on dance lessons seems like a lot!  Is that the going rate?  Fi and I didn't take dance lessons.  I guess we have still got some time though.  Would you say that they are worth the money??  Not sure $400 is gonna be worth it just to make sure we can slow dance properly.....on the other hand, I haven't slow danced in a while.  We were thinking of just practicing in our living room lol.  Would this be acceptable? Or do you really recommend lessons?

I was a dancer for 12 years, and instructors were never tipped. If you enjoyed your time and want to thank them beyond what you've paid, you could give them a small gift or later send them a framed wedding photo. I am sure they would love that!

I danced for over a decade as well, and my dad was an instructor.  He was never tipped, but many of his students would get him a gift at the end of the year (at the recital).  Those were his favorite gifts!
  • Ok, thanks ladies!

deana- I absolutely think it's worth it, but then again we had never really danced together before and had zero knowledge of what to do. We initially went in to the studio because they had a groupon- I think if you can find one of those even that would be a great start. Our was only like $20 and we got two private lessons and a couple group classes.
