Valentine's Day

Does anyone know what you're doing for Valentine's Day?

I have no idea! I would really like to send something cheesy to FI's work. All I can think of though would be cookies or some kind of food.

My FI is super romantic and I don't have a romantic bone in my body. All this is so foreign to me. Tips or suggestions would be awesome! I'm struggling to come up with anything. :(

Re: Valentine's Day

  • We don't celebrate V'Day since our dating anniversary is February 17th. I guess that will change next year! The weekend of the 17th is near a friend's birthday and 6 of us are renting a cabin in the woods from Sun-Tues so it's a semi-romantic trip. We'll probably stay at the cabin by the fire while they go skiing!

Have you thought about an edible arrangement basket? They do fruits and stuff. I have also found a lot of good things on here:  http://www.winecountrygiftbaskets.com/

One of the sweetest things as ex-bf did for me was a scavenger hunt around his apartment with a bunch of small things and then one larger gift at the end. Could you do something like that?

  • i used to be good at valentines day but i've lost my touch. i usually make DIY presents for him, but he always likes them. a couple years ago i used fabric paint to customize some boxers for him (i know it sounds goofy), and he loved them, he still wears them! i basically just got the ones he liked from target and made a cut out shape of a glock and painted it and stamped it on there.

another year i did the deck of cards filled with 52 reasons i love him. he really really liked that one, and keeps it in his nightstand. i'd love to do something like that again.

but for this year, we are going on a trip up to the wisconsin dells with his best man and his girlfriend. we're all good friends and we got a living social deal on a condo up there that includes 4 skiing passes and 4 indoor pool passes. i'm actually pretty excited about that! id still like to make/get him something small but i have no ideas.

  • We stopped celebrating V-day after 3 years of dating. It's just not our thing. Sometimes I'll get him a cheesy card and sometimes he'll get me flowers, and that's fine. It's on a tuesday this year so I won't even see him since he'll be at school.

  • We don't do much either.  I did buy a bunch of cards (most funny, some romantic) to put different places, (One in the bathroom, in his truck, in his lunch, etc) so he will find them throughout the day.
Edible arrangements has great dipped strawberries and they are fairly inexpensive.

Kelly, how did you create the deck? Did you use a website? Or was it a DIY? I really like your idea and I think FI would too! :)

  • I'm not really sure what we are going to celebrate this year. Our dating anniversary is March 7th, our 1 year engagement anniversary is on April 1st (yes, we had a few people who didn't *quite* believe us), and of course we will probably wipe all these and just celebrate our wedding anniversary next year. It's too many things to celebrate!

I'm thinking about just cooking a nice dinner at home (since it's a tuesday). I can get some frozen lobster tails, make a ceasar salad, bake some fresh bread, and we can do chocolate fondue for dessert!

  • The weekend before Valentine's Day is also FI's bday; we are going to an NHL game that Saturday afternoon (my team vs his team - not very romantic and could end up with someone sleeping on the couch lol). The day of, we'll have a nice candle light dinner with my son; he likes when we make a special dinner like that and to be honest, he is the real love of my life (awwwww).

  • We never do much.  For Christmas, he said he would take me away for a weekend.  That hasn't happened yet.  I told him we could skip last Christmas, V-day and my birthday, since the wedding is sucking all of our money.  I'd just like one good date night.

He keeps saying we have Valentines weekend, but every year we end up with his son, which is not romantic at all.  His son is 15.

i just bought a deck of cards (like $1 at target) and got a hole puncher and punched through them all. i got binder rings (at staples) and used that to keep them all together. then i just typed up all my reasons (and a cover) on my computer and glued them on to each card.

  • I'm with you dirty water, I want one good date night.

My plan originally was to do a ski and stay weekend, the hotel my brother got married at has a lovely package, and I got new ski pants for Christmas so I can actually ski with him this year.
    BUT
I do not have high hopes, he can kind of such in the Romance department :( He still owes me stuff from Christmas that I know I'll neve see now that he's laid off and I've put a choke order on ALL spending.  I might get flowers.

I usually stress myself out over it, I've spent too much money and time and donned lingerie and it seems he could care less, I highly doubt I'll have the energy or $ to put anythign together this year.  For once I want not be the planner, but at least I'm learnign its not worth all the effort when I can't even enjoy what I planned because ultimately its not appreciated enough for my troubles, and then I don't enjoy becuase I'm bitter my efforts weren't returned.

HOWEVER the day after is our engagement-a-versary.  I guess thats exciting

Thank you, I think I'm definitely going to be stealing this idea from you!

  • FI and I don't celebrate Valentines Day... we both came into our relationship thinking it was overly commericialized and we can show that we love each other every day, that this one is no different.
  • I used to be good at Valentine's Day too (and birthdays and Christmas), but I guess I've lost my touch. =P We probably won't do anything as we're taking a week off from work right before to drive to NC then VA to see his family and then my dad. That'll suck whatever money we had available away. =/ Maybe I'll get some flowers or something. Really, all he wants is something dirty... if you know what I mean. lol
  • I don't think we're doing anything for Valentine's Day this year :(  We used to take an impromtu trip somewhere (Boston, Chicago, etc.) but don't have the money this year.

I have a Valentine's Day-themed race on the 11th and it's in Stone Harbor, where we're getting married, so we'll probably do lunch or something and call it Valentine's Day thisyear haha.

The day after V-Day we have to go get him fitted for his tux for the wedding we're in 2 weeks before ours... and I need to find a BM dress, too.  So we'll be tight on cash because of that I'm sure.

Maybe I'll plan a nice night in :)  Pretend we're snowed in, make breakfast for dinner, and watch movies snuggled on the couch.  And have lots of sex.  That sounds fabulous haha.

<div>Haha, yeah I'm am a bit of a jokster but we didn't really mean for it to be on April 1st. I knew we were getting engaged (we decided to get engaged in Feburary so I guess that's our *real* engagement) but I had TWO friends getting married in Feb/March and I was a bridesmaid for both (MOH for one). Every weekend I had weddings, rehersal dinners, dress fittings, batch parties, showers- it got a little crazy and I also didn't want to steal anyone's thunder. Soooo, April 1st was the next weekend after everything kind of died down!</div>

  • He always gets me flowers because the first year I asked for flowers.  (We had been dating a year and he NEVER bought me flowers so I said I wanted some for V-day).  This year, though, we've been wanting to get some more art for our sadly blank walls, so we decided that we're gonna go pick out a nice piece of art together, and that will be our v-day gift to each other.

As far as sending him something at work, I know my FI would hate that.  I guess know first whether or not he'd even want something then send maybe cookies or something he really likes.

    So In Love

  • Celtic, Kelly, those both sound like really awesome trips.

FI kind of sprung on me last week that if he's home that week, he's got a surprised mini getaway planned.  He works out of town though, so we never know if he'll be home or not, so who knows if it will happen.

He's been gone on Valentine's day every year except last year, so a single gay friend of mine started what we call Fondulentines Day.  He is always coincidentally single on Vday and Dan's always gone, so we go get fondue together.  It grew to include 7 other people last year, which was also really fun.  IF we don't go to the surprise trip, we'll definitely be doing Fondulentine's day again :0)

  • We aren't really "gift" people for any holiday...we rather go eat at our fav Brazillian steakhouse which ends up being pretty expensive.  And/or we'll go see a show (broadway, comedy, etc).  We are more of a share an experience instead of exchange gift couple.  We are going to the restaurant but my FI keeps talking about how excited he is for our wedding cake.  So I contacted our baker and she is going to make little cakelettes for us of our wedding cake so my FI doesn't have to wait so long.  I'm so excited to surprise him!
  • We don't do too terribly much for Valentine's Day.  Cary always gets me flowers (and hopefully a card).  I'll get him a card and we'll probably go out to dinner.  Beyond that he just thinks Valentine's Day is silly so we don't exchange gifts (I don't want to force him, that kinda ruins it).

Chocolate dipped strawberries and a bottle of champagne might be waiting for him at home for dessert :)

  • Well I dont want to offend anyone but I hate Valentines Day... I think its so cheesy!  FI and I have only been together for one V-Day so far, but we had an awesome one last year. He bought McDonalds from the drive thru, and we sat in bed eating big macs and watched 50 First Dates. Im hoping this year is another repeat of that, lol.
