  We just finished creating our registries for our October 19, 2012 wedding, but we've been procrastinating on it. Is there anything you want to upgrade like your towels, or sheets or nice china?  Don't put useless stuff that you would never use on it.  I don't know of any stores that would let you register for new hardwood floors or a front door (Sears or Lowes maybe?).  If you keep your registry small, most guests will probably just give you cash and you can use it however you want (and have people spread the word that you're saving for hardwood floors and a new front door).

  We regsitered late December for our April 7th wedding.  We went with BB&B.  We also had everything we "needed", but it was all stuff from Target or Sams Club that I got when I graduated from college 10 years ago, so we registered for upgrades that will hopefully last the rest of our lives.  And good will got a heck of a donation from all of our old stuff.

  
  

  You can register for stuff at Lowes, Sears, or Home Depot, but I think hardwood floors would be a little bit weird.  You can always use your friends and family to use word of mouth to let people know (IF THEY ASK) you are saving up for home improvements.  You may get some Lowes/Home Depot/Sears gift cards, or people might just give you cash.

  We registered in March for our April 2013 wedding, because I graduated from law school in May - I got some gift cards and things to stores we had registered at, but we probably won't get anything else until closer to the wedding.

  
  

  I agree with PPs - if you want new floors and things, just make a list of those 15 things, decline showers, and use any cash you receive toward those items.  As a guest, if I gave you cash (which I wouldn't, but still) I would be pleased to know you were using it for home improvement type things.

  We registered for about fifteen things at Bed, Bath and Beyond.  We registered about two weeks before our wedding..?  Whoops.
  
  We got some stuff from our small registry but mostly we got cash.  It worked out perfectly.

  We've been living together for 4.5 years and my fiance's one rule was that I needed to keep my registeries small! I'm so glad I did because I already don't want to just give away alot of stuff I've gotten upgrades from my showers with. I registered in February for a August 2012 wedding, we had a short engagment so that was basically as soon as I could get to it. I would register for some small stuff, towels/ sheets/ blankets. Maybe under 20 items? And then if thats completed I would think people would know that you are mainly neededing the cash!

  Thanks guys! I know I'm not going to register for a home improvement place (lowes/home depot, etc) We really just want cash, but feel weird asking for money specifically. 

  
  

  We are serisouly stuffed to the brim in our house already. All of our stuff is nice and I'm not really the kind of person who would want to get rid of something that is nice just because I can. I would rather have the money or the few things that I do need so that we can fix up our house. 

  
  

  I guess it's never too early to register, maybe we will do that next week.

  We registered in March for our upcoming October wedding at Sears (tools, lawncare), Kohls, Belk, and a local boutique in our hometown. We have a lot of stuff already, but it's stuff we've had together since college when we first moved in together, so it is definitely time for us to upgrade as many items we have are on their last leg. If you have small registries, people will get the idea and give you cash.
