Flying with my Wedding Dress?

For all of you out of town brides that had to fly in what did you do with your dress?  I am VERY scared to ship it incase it gets lost.  I spoke with some of the airlines and they are not very helpful with letting me carry it on and hang it or lay it in the overhead.  I have figured out that it will fit into a carry on sized suit case so I was thinking of going with this.  The dress gets super wrinkled but I have time to get it steamed before the wedding.  I was just curious of your thoughts and what you have done or heard done.

Re: Flying with my Wedding Dress?

  • Someone posted about this on the Accessories and Attire board maybe last week?

I believe their alterations lady suggested turning the dress inside out and rolling it up like a sleeping bag. It sounds crazy but it could work! I think I'd be hesitant to do it if it had a lot of beading though.

  • Not sure how much this would cost, but you can buy an extra seat next to you just for your dress.  People do this all the time for things like cellos and guitars.

Also if you fly a lot and can use points to upgrade to first class, they are a lot nicer in general and have a closet for jackets where a dress could fit.

  • You could also call your airline to see what they suggest.  When DH and I were going on our honeymoon, there were plenty of brides who were flying with their dresses for their destination wedding so the airlines see this kind of thing all the time.

Whatever you do, be nice about it.  One of the brides on the plane was a complete biitch about how the flight attendent wouldn't allow her to put her dress in the first class cabin (she was flying coach).  After her attitude, the flight attendent was not willing to help her come to a solution.  Had she been nicer, I'm sure the FA would have helped her a lot more.
  • Okay here is my two cents:

Before the wedding, i was terrified that anything would happen to mine.  I carried it on and the flight attendants were SO nice and SO accomodating (and I had even asked a few flight attendants before hand and they told me to absolutely not carry it on - to ship it. there was no way in hell I was doing that).

Everything was fine - they put it in the first class coat closet.  We left right from Michigan to go on our honeymoon and so I just actually flew back with my wedding dress from Michigan in February.  This time?  I  rolled that puppy up and stuck it in my checked luggage - it was absolutely fine.  So, depending on how big your carry on luggage is and how puffy your dress is (mine had a bit of crinoline, but not much) you could also go that route.  It looks like it would never fit until you start mushing it down :)

Good luck! It was honestly one of the most stressful parts of planning and it turns out it was no big deal in the end.
  • Thanks for the help and ideas.  It does fit in a suit case but I did not want to do that if I did not have to.  Larzhope I, like you, asked the last time I flew home and all of the attendants said the same thing, do not bring it and ship it.  I will not ship it!!

I was going to pay for the first class upgrade and was hoping that they would be more willing to put it in the first class closet that way.  Either way I will be super sweet and even be willing to show them :O.  It does have some crinoline but it's not super huge.

It's nice to hear that others have done this and it wasn't that big of a deal.  Thanks again!
