extreme couponing?

did anyone else see that show? the Target/Walmart post reminded me of it.

it was amazing to see the sheer amount of stuff that people got more-or-less for free. I'm curious if the time/money investment that people put into it really makes the purchases worthwhile, especially considering half of the stuff they buy probably goes to waste.

I only use coupons for stuff I actually use at home, not just..."oh I have a coupon for Kix cereal!!".  No.

This.  I'm very picky with the coupons I do cut and even then I end up having to weed out expired ones about once every 2 months or so.

I do have a weakness for cutting out snack or candy coupons.

I usually only use coupons for BR items.

The couponing is nice in theory and it IS amazing how little they pay, but I don't want to eat noodles 3X a day for the next 72 years.

That was my thought - who is going to use 180 tubes of toothpase before they go bad?

I did see the episode a few months ago where the guy donated all the cereal, deodorant, toothpaste, soap, etc. to a local shelter.

    That's a nice idea.

I'm all about saving money, but I think that sometimes you pay for convenience.

    Yes.

The time and lost of space makes it insane for me, but they did save a ton of money.

I did side eye having enough deodorant for the rest of your life. That's a lot of tubes.

well, some of these people donate the stuff they got for free, so good for them.  it's like the dude who has free airfare 4 lyfe for buying a frillion pudding cups and donating them.

if i have a coupon for something, i am more likely to buy it but only if it's something i was considering anyway.  i don't care if it's $1.50 off, i'm not buying cooking "creme."

    Toothpaste goes bad?

I just saw the commercial where the woman was all, "I spend 6 hours getting ready for a shopping trip," and I was just no. I'm not spending 6 hours doing anything.

I like to use coupons when we eat out and I clip the Costco ones before we do our monthly shop. And I will go to one store over another if I have a coupon - for example, Bacon's going to get a DQ birthday cake because that's what I have a discount on this week.

It really is amazing what you can save.  I saved $88 at Target once (out of about $200). That's nothing compared to those people, I know, but 50% is pretty damned good.  And now, with so many couponing blogs that outline the deals for you, you don't have to think about it that much. ("Go to X store, buy A, B, and C, use coupons D, E, and F, pay $0.72 out of pocket and get $3 in register rewards for your next visit!")

I did this a little when Dex was an infant and I was unemployed. It's pretty gratifying to bring home a ton of stuff for almost nothing.

And yes, the really serious people are either hoarders or give their stuff away. It's almost a hobby, and a much more productive one than birdwatching or Mario Kart. I know a lot of people will get their neighbors' coupons (or extras from the paper delivery people) in exchange for some of the free stuff they get.

I guess I wish I could do this a little more, but I totally don't anymore. It makes me kindof stabby when I end up paying full price for stuff just so I can get in and out of the store faster.

I have a cousin who can buy a month worth of groceries (for a family of 11) for something like 15 bucks. My mom is always exploiting the "Get $15 for switching your perscription" deals, and if CVS has something she actually uses that ends up free with coupons, she will buy out every one in a 15 mile radius. I value my time a little too much to bother.

I don't buy anything online without first looking for a coupon code though.
