July 2012 Weddings

This odd question/statement was asked over the weekend...

'What is the point of buying gifts for your wedding party?? I really don't think it's necessary'

and I am curious how you would answer that question....I was a little taken back...To me, it's a way of thanking them for being friends and being a part of the day....The person wasn't thrilled with my answer...

So, how would you answer this question?
What are your thoughts on wedding party gifts?

Re: This odd question/statement was asked over the weekend...

  • I don't have a WP - but I would have replied exactly as you did...because I see that as the reason for the gifts! Why else??

It's not necessary IMO - but it's a nice gesture to thank them for being apart of your very special and important day..

  • Umm,  I agree with you.  It is a way to say thank you to the people that you had stand with you at an important moment in your life.  Sometimes just saying thank you isn't enough.

  • I actually was asked this question too. I told them the gifts for my wedding party are just a small token of my appreciation. It's a lot of work to be part of a wedding party and the gift doesn't begin to express my gratitude for the part they are taking in our day.

  • And a lot of them may have paid a lot (dresses/tuxes, travel, rehearsal, hair, etc). This is just a way to show your appreciation for them, from being friends/family to being there for you on your wedding day. It's always nice feeling appreciated!

  • Appreciation for their friendship, and, as mekiakoo said, to thank them for travel, buying a dress/tux, etc. I wouldn't be upset if I was in a wedding and wasn't given a gift, but I want to get my WP gifts.

I agree with what others have said. It's a way to show your appreciation for everything your wedding party does for you.  Not only to they have to buy dresses/rent tuxes sometimes they help out with planing showers or bachelor/bachlorette parties and depending on the venue many even help with decorating and setting up.  I agree with Meagan and Mekiakoo it's nice to fell appreciated and I want to get the people taking part in my wedding a gift.

  • I agree with pps on that this is for showing appreciation for everything they have done for me! I don't think they are mandatory but are nicely appreciated gifts.

  • Exactly what the others said. It's a way to thank them for being a part of your special day, to thank them for the time/effort/money they are putting forth to be in your wedding, and also just to thank them for being your friend/sister/whatever they are to you.
  • I would have answered it the same way you did.

This! And then I would have asked the OP does she feel it is unneccessary to receive wedding gifts from her guests?

  • I think it is a nice gesture to give to your WP since you are having them spend so much money on your wedding IMO.
