Block of rooms

We are having our reception at an Inn which has set aside a block of rooms for our guests. I just got off of the phone with our coordinator at the Inn and here are the highlights...
  • We have 12 rooms blocked off for a 100 guest reception. (that's all they will give us)
  • The room costs are $178, $185, $215, $225, $245 and $295.
  • We are forced to pay for two rooms (one is $295 and the other is $215 - oh and it's a 2-night minimum) the night of the reception because these rooms are above the room where the DJ will be playing, so they can't rent these out to anyone else because of the noise.
  • There is no discount on the rooms just because they are a block for the wedding.

Am I crazy to feel totally embarrassed about sending out STDs to family/friends with these prices?! I will be providing them with other suggestions for sure. I still can't believe that my FI and I have to pay $295 x2 and $215x2 just because of the noise!!

Re: Block of rooms

  • Those rates are a little pricey - however, I've paid them before for weddings.  Personally, I don't really mind because I know the couple picks the best/closest place and the rates are what they are.  It is odd that they are not offering you discounted rate for the block, and that they will only block 12 rooms (I think you'll need more, especially if even half the guests are from OOT).  I would def think they would give you a discount since you're having your reception there too.  I wouldn't feel embarrassed, but I would question them as to why they a) won't discount and b) are forcing you to pay for those two rooms.  I would negotiate a better guest room rate AND getting those two rooms above the DJ for free.

  • How out of line are these prices for your area? For the quality of the hotel? My room block rooms were priced higher than that, but the price was pretty in line considering the location of the hotel and its quality. I figured if people were uncomfortable with the rate, they could look into other options on their own, which some people did. A room block is a courtesy, it doesn't require anyone to do anything or.book anything. At most, if you are that concerned that its too pricey, you could maybe also include some info about other local hotels, for example "Additional accommodations are available at the Holiday Inn. For more information contact the hotel at 5551111."
