need to slim down alot. but how?

i need to lose at least 85 lbs in 8 months. how do i do this without starving myself or overworking my body?

Re: need to slim down alot. but how?

  • That would average out to about 2.6 lbs per week.  It would take an extreme amount of exercise and healthy eating to keep your body on that pace.  A goal between 48 and 64 lbs would be 1.5-2 lbs a week, which is still going to take incredible effort, but is slightly more realistic.

That being said, check Anna's sticky at the top of this board for tips.  Exercise and food logging will be your most helpful partners on this mission.

  • I agree with food counting - I do calories on myfitnesspal.com (you can see the ticker tape in my signature).  I'm also in advanced level kickboxing at a local dojo three times a week, which burns an unbelievable amount of calories.

I've learned to sub some high calorie and fat items with veggies - really learning to love sauteed veggies instead of mac and cheese or mashed potatoes as a side dish.  85 in 8 months is pretty hectic but you can achieve a large portion of that.  You can friend me on myfitnesspal to follow my diary and workouts if it will help!  Good luck.

  • scstar, have you tried mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes?  Or adding some cauliflower to your potatoes when you mash them?  I'm all for the real thing in moderation, but I actually really love the cauliflower alternative too.

  • I have, but have never made it!  I'd probably want a load of butter in it.  Right now I'm in love with brussell sprouts and collard greens.

  • This may sound extreme, but read the book Wheat Belly. I just started two weeks ago and have lost 5lbs already, but I only wanted to lose 15 total so that's a pretty big deal! My Dad weighs more than I do and lost 20 lbs in the first 3 weeks, with no exercise. Here is the website if you want to check it out http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/

  • Like Lobsters said, 2.6lbs per week average over 8 months is extremel difficult if not unsustainable.  Even 1.5lbs per week average over 8 months will take MAJOR changes in your life.  That much weight is a major change, and you'll need to change your entire perspective on things to make it happen...

Are you trully serious about committing yourself to this?  What is your relationship with food?  What was it that made you get to a point where you have 85 lbs to lose?

Answering those helps you clarify what you've done in the past that you need to change to make this change happen in your life.

I agree with PP, 85lbs is a lot in that time frame. Did you just pick 85lbs because that's what you need to lose to get to a goal weight you have in mind? You may be happy losing just 65lbs but toning up a lot. Just a thought. Sometimes what's on the scale is just a number.

  • PP's are correct, to lose the amount of weight you are hoping to you're going to need to drastically change your eating and fitness habits.  While that's an awesome goal losing that much weight might not be maintainable in the long run.  Same question as someone else: Is the 85lbs going to get you to your "goal weight" or how did you decide on that number?

If you're serious about committing to losing this weight I would suggest talking to a nutritionalist and they can help you set up a meal plan, also I'd talk to a personal trainer (doesn't have to be forever but they can make it easier for you to stick to workouts and help build a fitness routine that will work for you)

No matter what you do good luck!  Just be safe and realistic with how you chose to lose the weight.
