Band or dj?

Based on weddings you've been to or your own past wedding, which wedding did you enjoy more: one with a dj or one with a band?

Re: Band or dj?

  • This is a tough one, ultimately you have to decide what you and your FI enjoy more and what you can afford.  Bands are tricky in my opinion, you have to find the right band for the crowd.  When you do, it can be an amazing experience.  DJs are able to better respond to the crowd, read the crowd and change the music quicker to keep everyone on the dance floor.

We enjoy a variety of music and frankly couldn't justify the cost of a band that would be able to span all of our requests so we booked a DJ.
  • I like a band better, I think for the people who don't dance it's more fun to watch and I think bands play more songs that get everyone dancing.  I'm young so DJs usually play the songs I like, but for older people at weddings, I think bands are more fun for them.

I am having a band for my wedding.

  • I agree. Its a tough call. I've been to weddings with both. Personally, we couldn't afford the type of band I would want- and so we went with a higher end DJ.
The only thing about bands is that they are going to have to take breaks.

I went to an amazing wedding that had a killer band- the band was out of Nashville (the wedding was in alabama) and they were incredible. Of course, they play on music row in Nashville all the time nad cost the bride and groom a pretty penny.

I have also been to weddings with DJs and had just as much fun.

i agree that for older people that don't dance a band is more of an "event" like you get to sit and listen to a live band.
But if you can't afford a decent band, Id' say skip it.

I went to one wedding and they had a medicore band and it was noticeable. They weren't super professional and I have horrid memories of the lead singer singing" Since you've been gone" by kelly clarkson- as she screeched into the microphone (and I think kind of a weridly inappropiate song for a wedding)

Why not have the best of both worlds?  Check out Victor Events for an amazing DJ who works with live musicians-seriously, why didn't someone think of this sooner?  I have seen Victor at several weddings and recently with a live drummer accompanying him-SO COOL!  I have booked him for my wedding next year.

If you wanted to you could also add live music to your cocktail hour with a jazz trio or a pianist and vocalist.

Our band worked with a DJ so we had a live band that brought a DJ with them to play while they took breaks and to keep the music/party going after the band was done for the night...I am sure most bands work hand in hand with DJs in this way.  EVERYONE that atteneded our wedding commented on how fantastic the band was...not only were they talented but they loved the interaction that they had with the guests. Bands just bring a whole other level of entertainment to a wedding.  I was so glad we went with this choice because it was so much fun!
  • I think that a good band is better than a DJ but that a DJ is usually better than a mediocre band. We had a band (Rare Form) and they made our wedding.  They were awesome and so much fun.  A good band brings a level of energy that you just can't get with a DJ.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I'm leading more toaward the route of a band.  They def. bring a whole new level of energy and also elegance.
