when do I...

so I feel that every "checklist" forgets to tell you one little detail... when do you take the dress in for alterations?! I don't mean a fitting, I mean for them to clean it up? my dress came from David's Bridal, and there were a TON of strings hanging off, threads here and there, I want to have my bra sewn into the bodice, it badly needs to be ironed, etc... I've never had a dress done like this before, so I don't know how far in advance I need to get that stuff done... any of you girls know?

Re: when do I...

  • I made sure they took care of all the hanging strings before i left with it. once you leave the store with it they wont fix them for free. Im not sure about getting the bra sewn in bc im not doing that to mine. sorry im not much help

  • see? and when i tried it on at DB, I told them about the strings and the girl goes, "oh, that will all be done during alterations"... my FMIL was PISSED when she saw the dress (she paid for it) and has been asking me when I need to take it in.. maybe I'll just call DB and ask...though I'm now cautious to take it back there for alterations/fitting :(
  • How do they leave strings hanging off??? I would have been pissed. That shows poor craftsmenship in my eyes. Don't take your dress out of the store until you've tried it on and inspected every seem and stitch. Megan is right, once you walk out with it, anything wrong becomes your problem to deal with.

As for the cups sewn in, that should be done at your first fitting. They'll size you for the cups or whatever and they'll be sewn in in time for your second fitting. They'll steam the wrinkles out right before you walk out the door with it the last time. At least, they should. You can't iron a wedding dress, but the closer to the day of you steam it the better as far as being wrinkle free and fluffed up.

  • grr. now I'm mad. I wish I would've had one of my "expert bridesmaids" with me when I picked it up because I was told they'd take care of the strings later and believed them...
Thank you for the advice about the cups being sewn in! And we schedule fittings like in a couple months from now, right?
  • You're supposed to start alterations 2 months out from your date. Did you schedule it yet?

  • I would think ironing and any last minute detail checks would be done just before the wedding, since I would guess things could happen during the fitting/alteration process.

However, if the dress was in such bad shape when you received it...you probably shouldn't have accepted it or had them fix it before you left the store...
