xp: changing your last name

okay i know we talked about this before so I apologize in advance, but I tried googling this and I can't find anything. What do I need to do to change my last name? Aside from credit cards, loans, driver's license, and social security, is there anything else I need to change? Which of those do I have to do first? TIA

First I did my SS card and license, the same day.  We've slowly been changing over bank accounts, credit cards, etc.  I need to do my school loan soon.  You want to change it with your Human Resources and if you have any state certifications, like a teaching or nursing certificate.

I recommend your SS card and license first and then go from there.  I started signing my name with both last names until I got the credit cards with my new name on it.

Something I forgot about was my cell phone, water bills, peco bills, etc.

Also don't forget about dept store cc's that may not get used often (out of sight, out of mind).

Don't forget health insurance - this is typiaclly done by your HR.  You can try calling your provider directly but I was told HR has to submit the info.

There will be a shitton of things in your maiden name - any club cards you have for stores is another thing that comes to mind.   I bought a card at Hallmark and used my crown card and the lady thanked me using my maiden name.

Work has been the biggest PITA but in the real world I'm almost completely changed except for student loans, which are in process as we speak.

Just make a list and check them off as you go.  I've been very proactive about making the switch and I've still got a few things lingering nearly 5 months later.

PS - I think there is a checklist somewhere on the nest.

::butting in::  I'm still waiting for my certified marriage cert, which I hope comes soon.  Does it matter where you go for SS and DMV?  I can do the DMV in my county, but since SS has to be done during working hours, I might need to find a place near my office.

From what I've seen on this board, in PA it doesn't seem to matter.  I live in MD and HAD to do SS first.

I've heard to do SS first, then DMV.  I guess after that its up to you where you want to start.  I like the idea of keeping a spreadsheet, I have to make one up or check out the nest for the list. (though I am avoiding the nest haha)
