To go away or stay?!

Hi! My fiancé and I had both thought about the idea of a destination wedding before we were engaged -- but now that we are engaged and starting to think more seriously about places for weddings we are now both more toward a non destination wedding. Here's the thing - I fell in live with The Enchanted Barn online for our wedding to be but that is about 3 hours from where our family is and if that were to be the place would it be considered a more "destination" type wedding for guests? We both want something a little different since it will be a bittersweet occasion for all (my Dad unexpectedly died last year). Any opinions and ideas would help greatly!

Re: To go away or stay?!

  • 3 hours is far enough away that most guests will need hotels... but just for one night and no airfare.  I don't think that is a destination, but perhaps a minor inconvenience.  I got married about 4 hours away from where many of the guests live (where I live), and only a few RSVPed no because of the drive/distance.  I got more No RSVPs from folks 10+ hours away.

Have you looked into barns closer to your guests?  I know there is a place called the Little Log Village in Hastings that might be what you are looking for.  (Not sure exactly where you are located, just guessing twin cities).  You could also check this list for other barn locations that might be closer.  http://www.thebarnjournal.org/resource/event_barns.html

  • It isn't too far....  just think it through and make sure that you have accomodations for the guests thought out.  Talk to the hotels/motels in the area and reserve blocks of rooms, you might also see if they will give the guests special pricing if you reach certain levels of booked rooms...  I think its a great idea, especially for the guests to have a weekend getaway....  plan activities and things for them do to or have suggestions in the rooms before and after the wedding/reception...
  • Thank you for your help and opinions! I've heard some not-so-good things about the Enchanted Barn after researching it a little more and the owner hasn't called/contacted me after 2 weeks!
