Waxing Advice Given

I'm hearing so many questions about waxing.  Here's a few little pointers for you girls to think about before going all crazy with the bikini wax:

#1 Make sure you go to someone who has been referred to you.  It's surprising how many people do waxings without being properly trained.  We get a lot of women who have been waxed incorrectly come into our medical spa who have had BAD experiences.  So a good referral is key.
#2 Ask about the wax used.  Is it meant for sensitive skin?  Is it a honey base, beezwax base, etc?  Is a hot or cold wax?  Do they monitor the temperature or is the heat a standard setting?  Sometimes people think they've had a reaction to the wax when really they had a reaction to the heat and potentially the cream used on the skin afterwards.
#3 Remember to do a trial run of underarm hair or a basic bikini wax about 6 weeks before your wedding to make sure you react well to the wax used.
#4 I suggest getting waxed a few times before your honeymoon to ensure that you'll have no regrowth while on your trip.  The purpose of this is to get as much hair on different growth cycles as possible.  At this point the hair that grows back should be less brittle and more fine.
#4 When you're going for the real thing make sure you plan a week before the BIG EVENT for things to settle down- down there.  = )
#5 DO NOT GET WAXED THE WEEK BEFORE YOUR PERIOD OR THE WEEK OF unless you can handle more pain.  You are WAY more sensitive during this time.
#6 Take an antihistamine a half hour before you get waxed.  Some people react with little "skin bumps" that are a histamine reaction.  Usually an antihistamine like Bendryl taken beforehand will eliminate this problem.
#7 Go buy Bikini Zone Gel or Cream from the drugstore.  This is the best for prevention of ingrown hairs, longer lasting wax job etc.  It's fabulous even if you are just a shaver and don't want to go with waxing in the end.

Good luck ladies!!!  xo

Re: Waxing Advice Given

  • Thanks!  I'd never heard about the antihistamine . . . I always get the red bumps.
  • Like EMLA cream?  They use that on children before IV sticks.
  • I use orajel before getting waxed. and after. it helps to numb the skin. I figure it's gentle enough to use on baby's gums, so it should be gentle enough for that skin.

  • Itching sounds like one of two things: you could have had a reaction to the wax used or the person waxing did not wax in the correct directions therefore snapping the hair in the follicle instead of pulling it from the root.
I would say give waxing another try somewhere else that uses a different wax and use Bikini Zone for the days following to prevent ingrown hairs.  That area doesn't tend to need too much extra "moisturizing" but you may have a scenario there where you need a little more hydration due to the exfoliation that waxing produces so using Bikini Zone for that reason should help too.
  • As for the Orajel, I would be warry about putting anything that is meant for another part of the body on the tender skin between your thighs.  No matter how gentle Orajel may be it is still chemically created for your mouth.  And even though your mouth is an orifice much like the area we're discussing, you could still be taking a chance of infection (ie. yeast infection, UTI, etc.) by using something down there that isn't chemically meant for that very tempermental area.  I still stand by the No Scream Cream if someone is that concerned about needing to be numbed for the waxing.
  • POOH8402-no need to get your panties in a bundle.  :-)

If you're happy with baby Orajel down there, cool.

If you take a peek back through the forum here you'd see I actually don't "recommend" any over the counter topical anesthetics, but I do mention what clients have said in the past concerning No Scream Cream.  I personally don't believe any over the counter product can numb you enough for a waxing to make it worth slathering it on your skin but sometimes it simply makes people feel better to be attempting something; to each his own.  Concerning the Orajel I rather suggested that if choosing a topical anesthetic to apply before waxing your bikini area to go the safe route and choose something that is specially made for that area.  If you'd like me to elaborate on why I suggested that here ya go:
Baby Orajel has a lower does of Benzocaine (7.5%)  then No Scream Cream (20%).  Baby Orajel also has flavor additives and artificial sweeteners amongst other ingredients to make it more appealing for someone to put in their mouth.  All of which I personally would never recommend to anyone to slather on the OUTSIDE of their vagina.  No Scream Cream has so many preservatives it's absolutely absurd and I actually agree with you, I simply don't think it does enough numbing to be worth it.
And last but not least, I'm sorry to disagree with you but science would agree with me that the skin on the outside of the vagina is very different from the skin on your face.  Very, very different.  Skin structure, skin layers, nerve sensitivity, not to mention Ph levels vary on your body and the vagina and your face are two totally different planets as far as that's concerned.

I hope you're not putting creams meant for your vagina on your face.  Yikes.

    Happy Waxing!
