Wedding Invitations & Paper

Template for printing on full sheets and cutting down later?

I just got my samples from Cards and Pockets, and while I love the colors and the quality, I'm having trouble with the size of the paper.  Specifically, I don't know how to set my printer up to print on them.  I have an HP Photosmart 7350 (it's admittedly several years old - 5ish) and its default settings, as you can imagine, are geared for printing photos.  I don't see a paper size that matches Cards and Pockets blank invitations or their inserts (I have samples to fit their Signature pocketfolds). I have yet to find an option to choose a custom paper size.  Does anyone know if there's a custom paper size option?  Also, has anyone had success in getting their printer to print to the edge on smaller size paper?  If so, what were your printer settings?

If there's no way to customize the paper size (or print to edge), then I'm guessing my best bet is to print on full size sheets (i.e., 8.5 x 11 inches) and then trim after, which I won't mind doing. Can anyone offer some advice on how to set this up, or point me to a template to work from?

FI and I designed the invitations in Photoshop.  Do we need to turn them into pdfs or something to have more printing options?

Any and all advice will be GREATLY appreciated!  I would really like to DIY our invitations, but I'm totally stuck at the moment!

TIA!

Re: Template for printing on full sheets and cutting down later?

  • Photoshop gives you lots of options and is a great start.  It is somewhat easier, though, to use InDesign or Publisher to do a full-page layout.  That way, you can import the design from photoshop repeatedly and turn it to fit the max on one page.

In my bio I have a template for our RSVP card (I have the same pocketfolds you do).  It prints 5 to one 8.5x11 sheet.  I haven't turned the rest into a template (yet) but it wouldn't be that difficult to do, if that would help you.  Just let me know.  (FYI, I'll be out most of the day tomorrow, so it will likely be late Sunday before I could have that done.)

    How do you get 5 onto an 8.5 x 11?  I thought the minimum postcard size was 3.5 x 5 inches.  Can that fit on a 8 x 11?
  • I wish I had Publisher on my computer at home (have it at work, and use it all the time). I don't know anything about InDesign though (will have to check it out).

Through some more searching last night I found some Word templates online at http://buttercuppity.blogspot.com/search/label/invitations, but those are for pre-cut inserts.

Squirrly, if it's REALLY not too much trouble, I'd love to have a look at your templates!  I'm working on my designs this weekend and this coming week, so Sunday or Monday (or whenever you have a chance) would be great!

You can email them to me at kikijbird at gmail dot com [note: don't forget the J; the Knot glitched up my account after the format change last month and gave me back the screen name I deleted an hour after creating the account... as you'll see in my profile I am still kikijbird with the J... sorry it's so confusing!]

    Thanks so much!

<div>I think some are rotated 90 degrees to fit on the sheet.  There are pics in squirrly's bio under Templates.</div>

  • I used to work at a print shop and we only charged $1 per cut (not per sheet...put cut, so you can stack them), you might consider putting crop marks in and then taking it to a printer where they can use the guillotine to cut the whole lot at once! Even if you don't have crop marks, they will be able to cut it, just make sure if there is a bleed you leave about 1/4" for them to chop off. Good luck!

  • Thanks homediva... if I start going crazy that's a great option!

  • Yep, two of them are turned 90 degrees from the other 3.  I wanted as little waste as possible.  The other file has the invite, the accomodations card, and the map card on one page together.  It actually didn't take as long as I thought to do the templates, so I've added those to my bio too, for anybody who is interested.  It's got very faint grey lines that you'd want to cut on.  Or, you can delete the lines & replace with crop marks of your choosing, etc.  The conversion to Word doesn't work so well, so I'm not sure if the Accomodations card will be quite right.  Overall, the sizes are meant to be:

Invite:  4.5 x 6.5 (to be matted inside the signature pocketfold)
    Travel & Accomodations:  3.5 x 6.5
    Map:  3.5 x 5.75
    RSVP:  3.5 x 5

Fonts used are the same as the RSVP card:  Passions Conflict & Minerva Small Caps.

Also - my FI is an army officer, so the "Title" on the groom's line is for his rank.  If your FI isn't military, you'd remove that and the "United States Army" line just below his name.
