Getting in Shape

Running

Hey ladies, so as you know I'm 10 days into insanity down 3 lbs and living it. However, I would also like to start running... I am horribly out of shape and very intimidated..... So how do I start???

Re: Running

  • The couch to 5k running plan is great. There even are podcasts that time your intervals. Google it up. It's worth it
  • Another vote for the Couch-to-5k program.  It eases you right into it and I found the schedule very easy to follow and stick to.  You can even repeat training weeks if you have difficulty.

  • Couch to 5k :). Thats how I started which turned me into a little monster. I've since completed in the last 4 years despite a broken foot and leg which combined took me down for a year: 30+ 5ks, 1 half marathon, 3 7 milers, 5 10ks, 2 10 milers, 1 half marathon, 1 triathlon, 1 century ride, and up next a 5k, 7 miler, half ironman, half marathon, and a couple more 5ks to close out 2012.

<div>I think she was asking how to start and not an itemized list of accomplishments ;)</div><div>
</div><div>Ditto everything PPs have said but let me add one more thing.  Get fitted at a local running store for proper running shoes for your foot.  Sometimes it can be expensive but trust me, after issues I have had the price is well worth it to avoid injuries and have a "comfortable" run.</div>
  • Thank you all so much!!!!!! Im going to look into the couch to 5k sounds right up my ally lol. Should I do this in addition to insanity or wait until I am done?

Posted by lbarr088 Agreed! I have had numerous knee, ankle and foot problems and getting fitted for the right shoe can go a long way in avoiding all of those! I started with C25K too, and now I'm running 4 or 5K 3 or 4 times a week! When I started, I couldn't even do all of the 60 second intervals... That was the end of January. Hope you love it too, I think it's definitely addicting.. Once you feel the improvement from day one to day three in the first week, you'll be hooked. I was!

I'm with these ladies in that shoe fit is the most important thing. And toss them after 300-400 miles. Bad shoes hurt you.

  • I'm so glad I read this! I have been wondering the same thing... (: Going to try the Couch to 5k program soon along with my Weight Watchers online program.
