Hate Diets!

I am so sick of trying to diet, I have such a hard time watching what I eat. I am thinking I would like to start running any thoughts? I have no time to go to the gym and I HATE with a passion the gym. I hate being stuck inside, so I figure running would get me outside. Any suggestions on starting to be a runner?

Re: Hate Diets!

  • Myself and a lot of people on here do Couch to 5K (C25K).. Might be something to check out?

As for diets, yes they're not the answer. But watching what you eat is. Even if you're running and burning calories it's not going to forgive eating crap food all of the time (and I do not mean to presume that you do that, just saying!).

  • Never diet.. they are only a temp. solution.. You reach your goal then you stop and regain the weight!
You need to change your food intake. Get more fruits and veggies eat a bit less meat. Instead of buying that pack of oreos buy a bag of apples. When you feel peckish, grab an apple.
Cookies and junk do not fill you. But do not deny yourself. If you say "I'm never going to eat another cookie again!" Then in a week you are really craving it, you will splurge and instead of eating one or two eat like 12... I keep m&ms around all the time. When I feel a choco- craving I eat 1-3 m&ms. I never finish the bag. I do this maybe once a day. It keeps my choco craving in check and helps me to not eat too much.

Also, only running is good when you first start out. But your body can become used to an exercise and plateau. Get a bike, go for a log 7 mile bike ride once a week... run 2-3 days a  week and do some at home weight lifting 1-2 a week. just some tomato soup cans and do some bicep curls, get ankle weights and go up and down the stairs wearing them. You do not NEED a gym, but it can be helpful. I go to a very cheap gym that has the machines, but no shower, no pool, no classes. just very basic. I spend an hour there twice a week.

Also there are great cardio videos available on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/user/TiffanyRotheWorkouts/featured <--- She does a whole channel with 5-10 minute workouts. If you only have a bit of time you can do a 5 mintue one.. if you have more you can combine a few different ones.

  • That's why instead of me looking at it as a diet, I look at is as a lifestyle change. Diets don't work for me because I would just go back to eating junk. So, to stop temptation I completely cut out soda and junk/fast food, high fructose corn syrup, high amounts of sodium and high amounts of sugar. I have zero cravings for any of the foods I used to eat and I also don't ever want to drink soda again. I also don't eat meats or dairy, I use substitutes for them. So, yeah, right now I'm vegan. I eventually would like to eat meat again (as long as it's not from a fast food place), but I have no desire to now. DH & I have been preparing food at home, something that we honestly never did before with the conveince of fast food. You can find recipes at my blog, which is linked in my signature. I'm not a runner (yet), so I can't give you advice on that. Good luck :D.

  • What about tennis, or another sport?  It's a good workout because you run around alot and it's so much more fun than going to the gym so it keeps you more motivated.  You could start taking lessons...

Diet is a nasty word. And you say you hate watching what you eat, but if you don't make better overall food choices, then it won't really matter what excercise you're doing.

Incorporate more veggies and fruit, lean proteins and whole grains into your meals. This is more of a lifestyle change and less a diet. Have you tried tracking your food/calories? Myfitnesspal.com is a free website that you can do this on. It's eye opening in the beginning and really makes you accountable for your choices.
