Groomsmen and ushers

Do most weddings have both ushers and groomsmen?  I've seen it done both ways recently and am curious if there is a "right" or proper way to do this.

Ideally I'd love to have the groomsmen plus ushers so that I can have two of my close male friends and one of my cousins involved in addition to the bridal party.

Thoughts?

Re: Groomsmen and ushers

  • If you want both go for it... We are only having groomsmen no ushers.

  • I only recall seeing the groomsmen as ushers at weddings, but I'm sure you could have separate ushers and it would be fine.

  • You don't have to have both. I've only seen GMs be ushers, haven't seen different people be ushers.

  • We've got both.  Mostly because I wanted to involve some of my nephews.  So, we've got 6 groomsmen and 4 ushers.  But, we're also having 300+ guests, so having ushers will help keep things organized.
  • I say go for it if you want to use both.  We're only using groomsmen at the moment.  I don't know if my FI wants to have ushers or not.

  • I've seen GM as ushers and ushers as just that. I think we'll have ushers that aren't GM, mainly bc my brother isn't in the WP, but we'd like to still include him.

  • The GMs will act as ushers.

  • It is fine to have people as just ushers- go for it!
We decided against it because we don't want people sitting on a specific side for the ceremony so there wouldn't be much for them to do.
I am even contemplating a spiral set up because we have a blank canvas for a ceremony site...

  • We're having both.  My cousin has 3 boys and I wanted to have them all be a part of the wedding so the youngest will be our ring bearer and the other 2 will be ushers.

Correct me if I'm wrong... ushers "usher" guests to their correct seats, right?  If you are having open seating, then there's really no need for ushers.

  • My FSIL had both. I think either is fine. We are not having ushers because we are having open seating, and do not feel the need for it.

  • I think I am going to have my brother as an usher because I want to include him.  I don't want him to be left out and I don't think my FI is going to have him as a groomsman.

  • You can do with or without them. If you are having open seating, then no need (unless you have elderly guests that may need help).

I'm having them because I wanted to include my young soon-to-be 16 year old male cousin without having to include my other 14 year old female cousin who is a royal brat (who I love, nonetheless, but having her in on the WP would cause more drama than necessary). I'm using the "ushers are traditionally male" argument, even though I don't believe in the gender exclusivity.  My mom is super traditional, so she won't question it ;)
