Churches???

Hello,

We are currently looking for a church to hold our Sept 2013 wedding. I've been having a difficult time trying to find one that allows non-members without paying $1,000+ for a "rental fee", organist charge, and donation to pastor... My fiance and I are not currently member at a church.

Does anybody have any suggestions of churches they have been to? Our backgrounds are protestant and lutheran, but we are also open to attending a non-demonitational church... Or we are open to having our ceremony in another type of location, but want it to be indoors.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Churches???

  • Ooops- I forgot to include the area we are getting married; We are looking around the milwaukee/waukesha area to have our ceremony...
  • Have you considered having the ceremony at the same location as your reception?

  • St John's Military Acadamy has a beautiful chapel you can rent in Delafield.  You would need to contact them for prices.  http://www.sjnma.org/page.cfm?p=246

  • St. John's rental fee is well over $1000.

  • We had the same issue, but found a great church that we are actually in the process of becoming members. Its in Pewaukee, Crossroads - off Hwy G
The pastor is great! - younger congregation and everyone is so friendly! They just ask for a donation, for you to be invloved and do pre-marital counseling. You should stop in on a Sunday and see how you like it.
If you are just looking for a place to get married I would maybe look for an outdoor facility. If you are looking for a church than check it out!
  • We are having the SAME problem!  And in the same area.  I am Lutheran, fiance is Methodist.  We found someone to marry us (tentatively), however, it's going to exceed $1,000 as well with all the fees (church rental, pastor, organist, etc...).   We wish it wasn't so much $$ :(  But I understand everyone needs to make a living.

  • You should look into a unitarian church.
I got married at the one in hartland and there is one off of 124 or so and north ave. You will have an extra fee for the organist but everything else was extremely reasonable compared to every where else i checked that charged for non members plus pre marital classes.

  • Yes it is - the Pastor is so friendly and they are all about coming to church because you want to not because you have to, its been a great experience and we will continue going after we are married there. My FI who isn't a real church person really likes it. Very casual.

Yes I've thought of that.. However, we would like to have our ceremony at a church or other venue so we have time between the ceremony and the reception for pictures.

Oh, I'll definately have to check out this church!  Thank you!! :) Do they expect you to become a member if you are getting married here?? From the sounds of it you are becoming members and you haven't had your wedding yet, right?
  • They don't expect you to become members, we will just because we enjoy the church and the people. I mean our wedding is in October we have been going there since Feb and there is no pressure - there are some Sundays that we can't make it and thats fine with them, the pastor is really about sharing religion and building a strong foundation.
Services are at 10:00 and last about an hour.
  • I was a little bummed to find out when I called Crossroads yesterday, they said they won't let us use the church for a ceremony. I wish I could say we would be members, however, we both live over 60 miles from Pewaukee and there is just no way we can make that happen, unfortunately.  I have the same thoughts as Angiezimm...I would like a church as well, however, it seems to be such a difficult thing to find when you don't live in that area, or aren't members of their church :(  It's either pay a lot of money for your wedding to be in their church, or else get someone ordained to marry you.  This has been the hardest part of the wedding planning for us.

Thanks for the advice... From the looks of the webpage it looks like we might be able to use it without being a member!!! I'll have to contact them!
  • IYou don't have to be a memeber however I dont know if they will just marry you to marry you and have you be no part in the church. We really liked the church after visiting  a couple times and decided we wanted to get married there along with worship there - it wasn't a criteria to be a member, but we are active in worship and involved in the community.

  • Angiezimm - they didn't say whether it was because we were members or not. Just that as a policy they don't rent out space for wedding ceremonies.

When I contacted them, I never mentioned anything about "renting" the church, but maybe because I mentioned that we lived so far away, that they thought we wouldn't be members, therefore, just "using" their church as a location???  I'm not sure.
