Registering for luggage

My fiance is a frequent flier and has already invested in very good quality luggage.  I am thinking of upgrading my current luggage set but am not sure whether it is appropriate to put this on our registry since I would be the only one using it and since what I am thinking of registering for is rather expensive --- around $200-300 per piece.   Do you think I should register or just buy it for myself?  Of note, my fiance and I are only doing a small registry to upgrade some things -- probably 20 items max (and already several of these items are in the $150 price range).  165 people are being invited.  So, I'm not sure if it would be better to add on the luggage so that we are registered for more items so that we don't end up getting random stuff.  What do you think?  Thanks.

  • In answer to your first question, I think it is fine for you to register for the luggage as long as your FI is okay with that.  My FI is registering for tools that I don't even know what they are called and therefore will probably never use.  Keep in mind with expensive items, people may not want to spend that much on you.

Also, for a guest list of 165 I would highly highly HIGHLY recommend adding a lot more to your registry.  My FI and I combined each of our houses after living on our own for years, yes we have duplicates of a lot of things but we have found things to register for.  When we created our registries, they recommended I believe 3 items per guest.  We decided to register for things like servware that we wouldn't buy ourselves, more barware, and upgrades of most things we already have.  Then we garage sale the old stuff next summer and make more money :) If you only have a 20 item registry and a 165 guest list, don't have a shower.

  • it is perfectly acceptable to register for luggage! that is a very common registry item, and (most) people understand that.

i agree with PPs. for 165 guests, you really should add more items to your registry. you will be amazed at how many cool kitchen items are out now, and this is also your chance to register for cool food serving pieces you may or may not buy yourself.

  • Do you plan on having a shower? As a guest I would either have to decline a shower invite because I cannot afford a $150+ gift or find a few other guests and as a group purchase a gift. PPs are right - there are so many things out there you may not have thought of/looked into that are still cool and reasonably priced.

And go ahead, register for luggage! My rule of thumb when we reigstered was that we would register for anything and everything that we wanted but not expect a damn thing, so we won't be disappointed.

  • I am not having a traditional shower.  Doing a lingerie shower instead.  I just wanted to come up with a smaller registry for people who prefer giving gifts rather than money for the wedding.

  • I would register though- I am way to scared to not register and get random stuff yo can't return, I have seen that happen too.

I would do a universal type registry- I have luggage on mine :)  You can add anything really- we are using www.uponourstar.com and it is super easy.  Otherwise I would try to find other things like mentioned above, you have not nearly enough stuff for that many guests and I would be panicked it will become more of a hassle.
  • We totally registered for luggage and of the six pieces, four have already been purchased (we got two at our E-party and I guess I'll get the other two this weekend at my shower).  Ours ranged from $100-$300 per piece at Macy's, but they've been on sale many times since, so I just hope whomever bought them got a good price.
Our registry has items ranging from $5 to $500 (the Dyson vacuum) - something for every budget :)
