Okay to dance on carpet? - HELP!!!

Our reception venue is basically a big banquet hall that has the typical flat carpet that you see in hotels, etc.. Since they do more than just weddings (conferences, art shows, etc.), they do not have a dance floor built in, so we would have to rent one from a rental company, which is actually pretty expensive ($300 for a 12x15 floor that fits 36 people from our 150 person guest list). Do you think its okay for everyone to dance on carpet? Or should I spend the extra money on a dance floor? I appreciate any suggestions/feedback!

Re: Okay to dance on carpet? - HELP!!!

  • i myself don't care to dance and i'd be like i'm not spending the money on it if i don't like it. just like u wouldn't spend the money on food u didn't like. as long as you leave some room set up as the dance space then i don't really see guests having a problem with it. i'd think you could take that money to dress that space up with decor and what not to make it special.
  • I would actually prefer to not dance on carpet.  It isn't as easy to move, there is more potential to trip, and if it is dry there are also static issues (which aren't dangerous but annoying).
  • Hate to say it, but no.

    Yup yup.

You should tell your venue that they might get more weddings if they had a dance floor that they could use.  It's fine not to have one built in, but geez, if they're going to rent it out for weddings, they should at least have it available.

Dancing on carpet is fine. It's not the most preferable option but people will survive and make the best of it if you don't have the money to spare for a dance floor. If they don't, that is not your fault.
  • If you do end up going sans dance floor, which I think is perfectly okay if you don't have the money to do it (and it will only fit a quarter of your guests!) just know that you should be careful of women's heels getting caught on the carpet and causing them to trip. Also, any kind of waltz depends a little on being able to turn on your toe and twirling your partner would be a little more difficult. It used to be that dress shoes ALL had leather bottoms and so they would have no problem, but now so many shoes come with rubber soles :(

A friend of mine and his wife had all the dancing on carpet and they actually bought a bunch of little fun silky slippers that allowed people to take of their shoes and still spin on the carpet and not ruin their nylons or stink up the room, haha. It was a lot of fun, and people were actually able to move in the slippers a lot better than they would have been able to on the wood floor. It was so fun to see his grandparents "cutting a rug" in purple polka-dotted slippers. I understand it may not be perfect for your wedding, but it was one of the highlights of his!

I will say that all the older people in their families loved it because the softer floor was not as hard on their backs and they danced longer than they thought they would!

Good luck and don't worry too much about etiquette when it comes to a dance floor.

This sounds like fun! I was at an event not too long ago that had carpet throughout the dance floor and it was a blast. I wouldn't personally spend the money on a floor that is going to fit such a small percentage of your guests. Good luck!

  • CAUTION. I know someone who was a guest at a wedding with no dance floor and her heel got stuck in the carpet she feel and broke her ankle. I would spend the extra money.

  • Like I said before, you definitely need to make your guests aware that their heels could get caught in the carpet to prevent exactly what beccak722 is talking about, but accidents can happen on any type of floor (how many people have slipped and fell on a dance floor?! plenty!). Your first priority is the safety of your guests, but IMO that doesn't mean you MUST rent a dance floor. There are other options!
  • Not all 150 people will be dancing at once
dont make ur password so easy. gbck2CA2 hahahaha
  • My honest opinion, and this is just me, but I would feel less inclined to dance on carpet.  I don't know it just doesn't feel as wedding"y".  Have you looked at any other rental places that can rent a bigger dance floor?  Maybe if you looked at other options you might find something cheaper.  I know my best friend is renting one big enough to fit 60 people for only 100 dollars.  Like the pp said, not everybody will be dancing at one time but I too have been to a carpet reception where there were a few people that had rug burns on their feet by the time they were done, also another reason I wouldn't dance as much... and I LOVE to dance.
  • Hello,
My cousin recently had her reception in  a banquet facility that was carpeted through out. If the carpet is the flat carpet like in hotels, I think it would be fine. Just make sure there are no snares or tears that could cause guests to trip and fall.

My cousin's reception was a blast....more people took their shoes off halfway through dancing and thought the carpet was pretty comfortable.

    Good Luck!!
  • I went to an event held at a museum where we danced on carpet, and there was no difference for the dancers! If you're planning on ballroom dancing, then yes, there is a huge difference, but for most people, the difference is not noticeable. The only problem is that when people start dancing while they are holding drinks, the carpet stains, and a hard floor doesn't.
