Radiation?

Hi ladies, have any of you heard about radiation levels in Hawaii? I have friends in California (including my MOH) that say they are being advised that the radiation coming from Japan is hitting the coast. Since Hawaii is a lot closer I didn't know how bad it was there.

Obama issued a statement saying that the west coast, Hawaii, and Alaska have nothing to worry about at this point and no one should take any precautionary measures other than staying informed at this point.

It really makes you wonder how bad things are gonna get. We're on the west coast & have received emails at work regarding home emergency kits and saying we're fine...right now. Call me paranoid but i'm planning to beef up our emergency kit. plus it wouldn't hurt, where we live we lose power every winter a few times sometimes for days.

Yep, here in Alaska some people are getting freaked out cause we typically get the stream that would bring it right up here.  I'm not worried, if it gets here, there's not much I can do about it!

I don't think there's anything to worry about right now.  I work at a major news network and from what our reporters are saying the radiation threat is getting blown out of proportion - people hear radiation and assume the worst but the levels right now, while higher than they should be, are nowhere near the disaster levels of previous accidents.  Now down the road if things keep going badly the story could change, but right now - unless you live close to the nuclear plant - there's nothing to worry about.

If you're curious about what's going on at the Japan nuclear plant here's an interesting article explaining what's happening in a way normal people can understand :)

I should mention that this article is a few days old and as conditions have changed at the plant it is slightly out of date, but it still gives a good explanation and it made me feel better :)

There's a lot of media hype going on about it, isn't there? I heard a news headline about Radiation Contaminates Water Supply (said in a dramatic voice), but when it came to talking about what's really going on, yes, there was more radiation, but no, it hadn't exceeded safe levels yet.

Chill out; there's nothing you can do, and frankly the radiation that's making it over here isn't enough to really affect you. Smile

We just spent a week here & kept a close eye on everything.  Everything is fine and none of the locals are even worried.  FI's family almost didn't come for fear of exposing his young nephews, but really, there's nothing to freak out about.
