Platinum Weddings on WE

Is anyone else just as envious as repulsed by the excess in Platinum Weddings? I mean, they are gorgeous, but spending $400,000 on a wedding seems like an insane waste of moola.

That's why it's entertainment. The focus is on the money. Sure, the couples love each other, but the show is based on spending sickening amounts of money on one day. I guess if you can spare that money for a day, it's about putting on a show. You're not worrying about saving for a down payment or your kids' college tuition. I bet most of those girls spend more on their dresses and accessories than many of us spend on our entire weddings.

Honestly, some of the things they get they just pay WAY too much for. Those are couples who WANT the price tag to be large, and the vendors know it. You could do those same exact weddings (some of them) for much smaller budgets. They never would be cheap, but they do pay way too much for things.

But if I had $400k to throw around without negatively affecting my life in any way, I'm sure I would have spent it. We didn't really follow a budget for our wedding, just paid what we needed to for what we wanted it to be like. It didn't end up at $400k of course, but it certainly was a much larger number than I ever expected. I even wish we spent more on some things (flowers!!! to avoid my florist) - I feel every penny spent was worth it.

Actually, I take that bag. I wouldn't spend $400k on a wedding bc it's just not necessary to spend that much to have an absolutely fabulous wedding where no expense was spared. Maybe more like $250k ;)

When you say it's for a wedding, the price goes up! I know in some cases with these TV shows they tend to exaggerate the price. A lot of the places give the couple a discount when they find out they will be on TV in return for free advertisement.
A family friend was on My Sweet Sixteen, half the stuff they didn't pay for. She never got the car, they just made a deal with the dealership for the show. I know it's a totally different show, but same concept.

    That's a good point Newport - I bet that happens a lot!

You are right Newport, and with the jewelery, I bet a lot of it is just on loan- like the necklaces/earings, etc. Of course I hope they keep their wedding/engagement rings! ahahaha

I think you are right Newport!  Like on my Big Fat Wedding, or whatever the show was on VH1 -- the had Dina and Tommy on and said their wedding was a million dollars.  Few years later Dina is a Real Housewife and she admitted they spent no where NEAR that

But BB, if I had $250k and no guilty feelings I would totally blow through that too ; )

Yup, if I had retirement and kids college funds covered, I would spend as much as I felt like and not feel bad about it at all!  Those people or their families worked hard for the money, and if that's how they want to spend it, I have no problem with it.   Along the lines of what Boston Bride said though, I would try to avoid just pissing away money to piss away money.

Although I love the show, I would feel a little ick about having my guests see how much I paid for every line item.  I'm also not a huge fan of some of the huge, oddly shaped flower arrangements, and I think I would still do a tent (although a way nicer one) bc I like the summer night feel.  I would love to have the amazing food and bar they have though!  I was super obsessed with the one in the cave in Mexico.

I voted maybe because as much as I think that it's just too much to spend that much money on a wedding that's it can be seen as wasteful, I can't imagine how I'd feel if money is of abundance and 400k is spare change.  I probably wouldn't be as savvy of a shopper if I were THAT rich, so I might spend that much on a wedding.  Otherwise, I would say no.  I am glad there is a "maybe" option, though. Agreed - I'd love to spoil my guests like that, but I don't think I'd want to be on the show regardless... It really is just about flaunting what you spent, and Id be embarrased for my guests to see that

I may be super unpopular saying this, but I think the majority of the weddings I have seen on there are HIDEOUS. I mean, all the Florida and Hawaii ones are seriously awesome. All the ball room ones, though? Vom.
They are all spending SO much on stuff there is no focus. There is no highlighted item that stands out and nothing memorable to most of them besides, "holy shiit some one with a ton of money just puked wedding all over this castle." Admittedly, if I were a guest I bet the food would be outstanding.

In short, the ladies on this board do ballroom better than those people, and with out the disgusting makeup, excessive jewlery/tiaras, and crunchy hair.

I have to agree on that point.  If there's one thing I've learned from wedding planning, from my dress to flowers and decor, simple and luxurious (or luxurious looking) is better.

Says the girl who is making 800 LED throwies next weekend haha.

I know they filmed a show in Newport recently at OceanCliff and it's going to be aired this spring. http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/raina-dawn-events-secrets/e82e98d1e25c483b2fff3b13a08da624
