Casual Dinnerware & Flatware

This is half vent/half begging for advice.  We just started registering on Saturday.  I am so overwhelmed by dinnerware & flatware choices.  We are very particular about flatware so we want to see it and touch it in store.   We were looking at Macy's but everything seems sooexpensive.  (maybe because I've only bought cheap stuff in the past)  We initally liked Noritake Colorwave in Graphite but it was very expensive at Macy's, it was less at BBB.   I'd consider adding either Target, BBB or Crate & Barrel if any of them have something we really like.

What casual dinnerware & flatware did you register for??   I'm so confused.
Thanks!!

Edit: Our concerns on plates are dishwasher safe, microwave safe and I'd prefer if they don't scratch easily from silverware.

Re: Casual Dinnerware & Flatware

  • We got the Martha Stewart Vintage Rose set from Macys. Its usually on sale for about $50 for a 16 piece set. Its light weight, doesn't scratch, and is dishwasher and microwave safe. We got it at Christmas and so far so good.

We really really wanted Noritake's Colorwave Graphite collection.  However, my parents have it in the blue color, and are incredibly disappointed with how scratched their china is already.  Their old Noritake is what we currently use, and it's in better shape than their new dishes.  My mom saw the Graphite on our registry, and pretty much begged us to take it off :(  We still don't have every day china on our registry, only fine bone china from Waterford.  I'll listen in for other suggestions!

  • I registered for the Noritake colorwave in graphite! I think in the month that I have been registered, it has been on sale 75% of the time, usually at about 40-50% off. But I'm not registering for fine china so I didn't really pay attention to the price on the Noritake.

KKS-that sucks that your parent's dishes scratched. I hadn't thought about that. Now I'm re-evaluating as well.

  • FI and I live together and have white dishes from IKEA that we absolutely love.  We felt no need to register for new casual dinnerware since we'll just keep using those.  We did register for nice china.  As for flatware, we just registered for Oneida Icarus 45-Piece Flatware Set at BBB.  It's $80 and serves 8.  We didn't register for formal flatware.

  • We got Corelle plates which are microwave and dishwasher safe and don't scratch. And Gourmet Settings flatware which is really different and I love it!
  • I was having the same problems with formal china!! We don't need sterling because my mom has 20 place settings and tons of serving pieces of hers, so I'll just use that when I need it and eventually she'll pass it all down to me. We ended up not registering for a formal because I was so frustrated.

For our everyday, we went with a nice/heavy china that could be dressed up for formal uses. It's Raynaud Osier. The girl in the store we registered said she's had it for 3 years and never had a chip or a scratch.

For our everyday flatware, we went with Reed & Barton Pomfret. We're huge Reed & Barton lovers in my family!

Our everyday flatware is Oneida Louisiana:

I tend to like ornate flatware and I was partial to the name. =)

FI and I didn't see the need to register for any thing fancy. We would never use it anyway.  We just wanted some nice looking plates, bowls, and coffee cups we could use. I know it's cheap, but we're hoping that it will last us for a while.

We didn't register for any flatware because FI said "my mom has taken care of that." So I'm know help there. I'm curious to see what she bought (I know FI picked it out and I'm getting it at my shower)
  • We registered for a really plain set from Wedgwood - http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/regProduct.asp?WRN=-884520783&sku=16819700&

They're pretty and elegant and can be dressed up with anything.  They're made out of bone china which is pretty durable - in fact when we registered at BB&B, one of the registry consultants picked up the mug and gave it a few hearty taps against their granite countertop to show us how hard it is to chip.  They're also lightweight, which is a must for me - I have a theory that the heavier the plate, the more I eat because it's harder to tell how much is on it when I pick it up!

As for flatware, we registered for this: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/regProduct.asp?WRN=-884520783&sku=17745379&

Also simple and elegant.  We're not super fancy people, and I prefer to get plain staples to dress up.  I get bored quickly :-P

We wanted something that could go with everything, hence the white.  We've already received all our dishes and I can't wait to use them!
