book prices---ugh

It is ridiculous how expensive these books are. I only have 3 classes with about 5 mandatory textbooks, which cost 582 dollars. Then I have about 6 books highly recommended for another class, which used are about 400 dollars. That is basically 1000 dollars for just one quarter of my PhD program. I sooo cannot afford to pay that much each quarter. How do you guys deal? Where do you girls go for your books?

    I try to buy as many used as possible, and then re-sell as many as possible. My school has a really good used book store and consignment program, so it works out fairly well. I would try looking into that, and look for student-run ones as well (my school has one on Facebook, and an independent website). I still end up paying several hundred dollars per term that I don't get back, but it's better than paying the full $700 or so it would cost to buy all new and not sell them.

    I understand your trouble and frustration! I've paid thousands of dollars for textbooks and have hardly gotten any money back for them bc my school has ridiculous returns and resales.  But this semester I have found that renting books is much cheaper and efficient, especially for books that you dont want to purchase.  I've gone to sites like collegebookrenter (or something of the like).  If you google words like "textbook renter", then you'll get some good sites.

    Try, half.com they might have waht your looking for. And I understand totally, im paying for my school with loans and grants beacuse I dont have a job. I only that three classes at a time and I think the most my books cost at one time was 1000+ dollars. This term its 600. Its sad how much it cost to go to school and get an education.

    it is quite expensive to buy them - but if do you buy (and not rent) your text books, you can resale them on half.com and regain most if not all of your money back for the books. If you rent your text books, you just have to give the book back and don't get anything back for them.

    Whenever I can, I buy used online (I like half.com) but I always check my school library and public library first. This semester I found three textbooks between the two libraries (and one was an online edition, so I don't have to carry it around!). I only buy and keep the books that pertain to my degree. I always sell back the ones I know I will never read/use again.
