Timing on Invitations

I also posted this on the "Invitations" board, but you guys all seem really helpful, so here's my question...
We are having both the ceremony and reception at the same place and are doing a very short ceremony (maybe 15-20 minutes including processional and recessional).  Our cocktail hour starts at 6 PM, so working backwards, I figured we would start the ceremony at 5:30 and put 5 PM on the invitations, but someone said that people will get there early anyway and then will be waiting for almost an hour... so they suggested putting 5:30 on the invitations and start just a few minutes later.  I am unsure what to do... Any advise?!?

Re: Timing on Invitations

  • Don't lie about the start time of the ceremony. It's rude to guests.

  • Say 5:30.  No one expects weddings to start RIGHT on-time but I agree that many people like to get there early to be polite.  IMO forcing some guests to wait over 30 minutes would not be a great way to start the wedding day/night!

  • I definitely wouldn't lie on your invitations. As a guest, I've never assumed the starting time would actually start on time. Most people will arrive at least a few minutes early and it's okay if your ceremony starts 5 or 10 minutes after the 5:30 time listed. They're the ones that look like fools if they come walking in 20 minutes late because honestly, who starts a ceremony that late after the original time printed on their invites? No one.

  • OK, I definitely wasn't thinking about it as lying - Multiple people (including the wedding coordinator at the venue we are getting married at) told us to put 5 PM on the invitation, so we doing it based on their advice.  Having never been married before, I assumed they knew what they were talking about!  But we have decided to put 5:30 and start immediately... if people are late, that's their problem!
