Opinion Needed

I am debating whether or not to add a top band to my wedding rings. I keep going back and forth. Our jeweler is going to only charge is $700 to add the band... I am just concerned about my budget. I mean... it would have to go on our credit card. Here are two pictures. One is of my engagement ring alone, and the other is with my wedding band on the bottom. If we add another it would go on the top.

Would you add another band, or leave it alone and save the money?? Ahh, i am just so indecisive!!

  • Hmm well I don't see the pictures but I have a question about the "it will have to go on a credit card."  Will you pay off the balance right away or will you have to pay it off in installments and pay interest on it.

If you do not have the money to pay it off right away, don't buy it.  You should not be going into debt because of a wedding no matter what the item is.  If, after wearing just the one band for awhile, you can't get used it, you can always save up and get the top band for an anniversary gift or something.
  • hmm.. where did those pictures go? They aret loading for me either.
But to answer you question.. the card would not be paid off. Because I cannot make up my mind, I should just go wit my gut and not get it. I am afraid that later on down the road the band will be more expensive.... but I guess i'll cross that road when I get there. Because I do not have the cash... its probably best if I just hold out.

Is it apparent I am talking myself into NOT getting it. LOL.

  • Plus you have to figure that the band is going to be more than $700 anyway because you are going to be paying interest on the balance.  Depending on how long it would take you to pay off, the interest could be more than what any price jump would do.  Plus carrying a balance can ding your credit score and end up costing you money down the road.

Even without the pictures and the credit card debt stuff, I would probably still wait and see.  $700 is a lot of money to pay for something that you seem indecisive about.  You may end up loving just the one band :)  Wear it for a few months after the wedding and see where your head's at.  If you still can't stop thinking about it, save up the money and get it for an anniversary gift!
  • Yeah it sounds like you've made your decision. Like emartson said, there's no reason to go into debt over this. Wait a bit, if the money is there in awhile and you really want to get it, get it.

  • I can't see the picture but I would say not to get it.  It is not worth going into debt for.  I have a fairly intricate ring, so it was impossible to find a perfect band for it.  Custom making one was only an option if we wanted to go into debt for it. Ultimately, we decided it was not worth it to have a wedding band, I don't regret it one bit.

This isn't true. Carrying a balance actually HELPS your credit score, assuming you continue to make regular payments and make them on time. Carrying a balance improves your credit score because it shows creditors that you A.) Pay your balance on time and B.) Are willing to pay the interest (which is all they really care about).

Now, as for whether it's a good idea to carry a LARGE balance, I would usually say no unless you're confident you can pay it off within 2-3 months.

OP - I would say your jeweler is just trying to sell you on a service you don't really need right now. You will always have the option to do this in the future when you're more ready and able to make the decision, so hold off.

False!  Carrying a balance does not affect your credit score any more than paying off the card in full every month will.  This is just one of those false ideas that is out there so much that people believe it.  Using credit (which is what you do when you use the card, then pay later) and paying it off is what they look for.

Second, it is never a good idea to keep a large balance on your card if you're looking to improve your credit score.  One factor taken into account when determining your score is your debt to available credit ratio.  Using more than 40% of your available credit will negatively impact your credit.
