what to wear....

We are having a very informal Sangeet at our house and then an informal lunch the day after the wedding also.  Do I have to wear something Indian for the lunch?

I would, yes. Wear a punjabi suit, a medium heavy churidar. Nothing too crazy with the jewelry. Have fun!

I would say yes too! For all wedding events I'm wearing an Indian outfit. Trust me when you think about it, it's easier just to throw one on then to think about if the outfit you have is "appropriate" for family.

We're having a barbeque the day after as well, and I'm not wearing an Indian outfit, I'm going to wear a nice daytime'ish dress.  More casual and something that I can look for here w/more selection than having to look in India or at indian clothing stores here.  Also, it changes it up a bit. :)

For the Sangeet, I am wearing an indian outft, but like you said, not as formal as I would wear if the event was at another venue besides my house. :)

Clothes! Anything you feel comfortable in - I wore a cotton kameez shalwar with churidar pants, and pinned the dupatta to my shoulders, so it wouldn't move in whatever I was working on... I wore an indian print skirt, with a casual top with 3/4 sleeves and that was good enough as well :)

Whatever you feel like, but please wear some clothes ;-)

Thanks everyone!  I initially thought of wearing a nice daytime dress but for some odd reason FI really wants me to wear a sari...he is not really indian culture or customs so I thought this was interesting.  Anyway- I don't have one really and dont want to spend money in another indian outfit.  I have looked through my sister's and mom's sari's already and I can't find anything I like...ummmm.

Then I thought of a simple shalwar but again everything I have is very old school and the new ones that are nice are too expensive and may go out of type in a year or so.

I'll keep looking something has to come up...

Do you have cousins your age? Or around your age? Maybe they have something you can borrow? Visit a friend's closet?

Sometimes exclusively.in has some really nice saris that are classic looking and might be worth the investment.

If he really likes the saree look, maybe you can wear any lenghas you have? The dupatta of lenghas can easily be draped to look like a saree. That way, you can be comfy and he can also get whayt he likes?
