What do I do??

As I sat down at my desk this morning and started working I looked at my E ring and realized that three of the little diamonds around the outside of the larger stone are missing.  I don't know what happenend.  I don't think I've done anything out of the ordinary with my ring on lately.  I added it to my homeowners insurance when he gave it to me in September, would something like this be covered?  I don't know what to do.  I wanted to show my family in Maine my gorgeous ring this weekend but now it looks weird with random stones missing :-(

Re: What do I do??

  • I would see if your FI bought any sort of coverage with the jewler. When an ex of mine bought me a ring that had small stones around the larger center stone, he bought a lifetime policy that covered repairs if any of the smaller stones fell out. So maybe (fingers crossed) your FI was able to do the same.

If that doesn't work out, then I would call your insurance agent and see what your policy does cover. Most of the time homeowners policies will only cover if it is lost or stolen. :(

    Good luck!
  • I agree with PP... Check with FI! I have something through our jeweler but it's only covered if I go in for checks every 6 months. I'd call your insurance agency pronto to check. Sorry about the ring :( when you go show everyone in Maine they'll just be excited to celebrate the engagement! It will be okay if the stones are missing still. I hope you figure it out soon! Let us know!

  • FI told me to go to the jewler and have them see what they can do.  He went to high school with the owner so they are usually really good to us.  I just had it checked 2 weeks ago and they told me everything looked great.  I don't know what happenend.  Hopefully when I go on lunch they'll be able to fix it for me and tell me what to do as far as the insurance goes.  I'm not sure what the exact coverage is on it from that end.

  • Not sure the size of these little side diamonds, but if they're fairly small they'll probably cost less to replace than your deductible on your homeowners insurance is anyway.

  • I would get some kind of coverage besides homeowners on it.  Like PP said, the deductible might cost more than the diamonds themselves.  I got an appraisal on my E ring a couple months back, and the brochure to get coverage, but haven't done it yet.   Maybe next weekend when we go to get the band I'll have the value done all together in one appraisal and send it out from there.

    Good luck!

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • My ring is currently at the jewelry store, thank goodness I work right up the street from it.  They are going to check the remaining stones, tighten everything up, take it down a half size, and see if they have the right stones to replace the missing ones.  I'll be picking it up at 4 either way.  At this point, I don't care if they charge me for the replacement (I can't imagine they wouldn't) because I just want my ring to be whole again.  I'll eat Ramen noodles for a week if I have to!
Thanks for the tips everyone :-)

  • I was going to agree with PP, that your deductable on your insurance might be too high unless it is itemized with a lower deductible seperate from the rest of the policy. Also, despite what a lot of people believe, insurance companies do insurance 'for stupidity' as we like to put it... there are a lot of things that are just general 'oops it happened' that are covered :)
  • This may not help you know, but the company I get auto/renters insurance through also offers a jewlery insurance policy.  I have a $10,000 policy on my jewelry, I thought it seemed unnecessary, but then I found out that when I bunded it with my auto insurance, it was actually free to me!  This might be worth checking out.
