Plato's Closet

Has anyone ever sold clothing there before? I've never been in one, but we're going out of town this weekend and Friday my hub is golfing and I have to find something to keep me busy all day so I'm thinking about taking some clothes there and selling.
I've heard they give you cash and I've heard they give you merchandise credit..?

Re: Plato's Closet

  • I looked into it once. They only take certain brands of clothing, like Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, stuff like that, so be sure you find out what those are before you bother loading stuff up. I think they give you a percentage of what your clothes sell for and you can either take it as cash or a store credit. They a have a flyer at the store, I'm sure you could just swing by and pick one up.

  • Yep, I have. They only take certain name brand clothes though, with no rips or tears or stains. At least in my experience anyway. I gave a bag of clothes to them (I'd say, maybe 10-11 items) and got $35 back. Not bad. I've only had them give me cash but maybe they do merch credit now, it's been awhile.

The first store around here opened when I was in high school. I sold a lot of clothes back then but haven't gone back in years. My sister has a friend who works there and she says a lot of the employees just take their own clothes and their friends' clothes.

  • I loaded up a big rubbermaid bin of stuff one time, drove across town (which is treacherous, our traffic sucks) and got a big fat lot of nothing. They didn't want any of my clothes. I felt kind of losery. My wardrobe sucked, apparently.

  • We have. They're pretty picky about what they'll take, but we got some cash for my daughters' clothes.

  • I felt way too old when I went into that store.

Himes, you should also look into just regular consignment stores because they aren't as picky about brand names.

  • I have gone there a couple of times. They are kind of name brand whores...sorry they made me angry a couple of times. I did have some AE and Hollister stuff, But I also had really nice clothing but apparently not the brands they wanted. They told me my clothing was too mature for their store....come on I'm only 25! I had Gap & BR, old navy clothing. I took in a ton of sweaters before the winter, and they told me they weren't looking for sweaters. I saw 1 rack of sweaters while I was there.

But they do give you cash.
  • I don't really want to buy anything, just sell. Haha. I don't have a lot of Abercrombie & Hollister b/c I haven't worn that since high school. It's mostly name-brand, just not Hoillister and Abercrombie. Maybe I will call to see which brands are "acceptable". It's 2 1/2 hours away!

  • Dani- have you tried any regular consignment stores in Indy? I know there are 2 in Avon near me. But I haven't taken anything there, or bought stuff from there.

[QUOTE]The one here where I live gives you cash but they don't give you much. It was kind of a rip-off so I sold my stuff on Ebay instead. ETA: Oh yeah, if your stuff isn't Abercrombie or Hollister, they might not take it. I tried selling a Michael Kors item and they don't even know who he is.

Well that's just sad. And I'd be happy to take any other MK stuff you don't want off your hands.

This site supposedly gives you a list of what brands they will take. I know when I took clothes there years ago they took all my clothes and they definitely weren't all AE or Hollister. I would for sure call ahead though to make sure.
  • the one I sold to was normally frequented by a bunch of rich sorority girls, so they were actually picky. they told me that the tags have to less than 18 months old, and that they can "tell." I dunno, whatever. I'll take what they can give me and donate the rest.

I've never sold to them but I have shopped at them. There are a few in Broadripple that are good, and there's one on the west side on Rockville Road that is pretty good.

In Broadripple, I went to The Toggery and found some good stuff there. Crazy 8 Boutique is cool too, more geared to 20s-30s crowd. Rag O Rama is totally college hippy stuff. The one on Rockville Rd on the west side is Katie's Consignment. There's also a furniture consignment shop on Rockville, across from the Wal-mart and I like to go there and look for stuff for the house.

  • I tried to go there once. They also specify that the clothes had to have come out in the past year. It's ridiculous.

I just ended up donating everything.

Ok great thank you!!! I know where Katie's is, I might try there. I have some stuff that is nice but Platos wouldn't take it. So I am going to try there.

We have something similar called Buffalo Excahange and I felt the same way. My friend who went with me didn't get anything either, though.

  • I used to sell clothes there when I was younger. They are very inconsistent about what they pick. For instance, I remember one time having a couple dresses, they were both the same brand (express maybe?) but one was older. They picked the older one over the newer one.

I've left there with 30 bucks and one time I made like 180. It all just depends, I think.

  • We have a Buffalo Exchange here and it made me extremely sad to be in there.

  • the last time i tried to sell to platos was a huge dissapointment. i brought tons of NEW stuff from the gap, nordstroms, etc., and they said it was all "dated" and not "in" right now. yet they were selling the hell out of ed hardy. i got in a fight with the girl and said that my nordstroms dress was far more stylish than ed hardy shirts that were last cool in 2007. she did not like my answer. however, 2 christmases ago i needed cash bad, sold four pairs of jeans and some shirts and got over $100.
