Wording on enclosure card?

My fiance and I are having an outdoor wedding at my parents' farm in June and I'd like to include a matching "enclosure card" with the invitations that gives directions to the house and instructions about where to park. Because the ceremony will be held on a hill behind the barn (and will involve guests walking about 200 yards through the pasture, which will be mowed), I'd also like to include a brief note about the setting, so that perhaps guests can take that into consideration when picking their shoes. (As 5-inch heels will probably not be the best choice.) Obviously guests can wear whatever they want, but I just thought it might be nice to give them a heads-up. However, I don't want to sound too preachy about dresscode or anything. What's the best way to word this? Just say "the ceremony will take place on a hill overlooking the house" and assume people will know this involves walking through grass? Or should I specifically say "wear sensible shoes"?

Re: Wording on enclosure card?

  • If you have a wedding website, that's a good place to put all this information as well.  For the enclosure card, I would list the directions and parking instructions.  At the bottom, I would write "The ceremony will take place on the lawn behind the barn".  People will get the hint.
  • I got an invite once that said "Please be prepared to walk down a grassy path."  I thought that was nice heads up.  I wore flats and was grateful I didn't have to deal with heels digging into the dirt.

This is perfect. Never tell people what to wear, just give them the scenario and they will dress appropriately.
  • Thanks everyone! This is really helpful - I felt odd telling people outright what to wear, and I'm pretty confident they'll get the idea when I say where the ceremony is.
