For all of you boudoir girls....

I was reading a post before, and a lot of you girls do these boudoir photos. My wedding is a day before fiance's bday... so I thought this would be a great idea. It seems like a lot of you love to do them... but I feel like and idiot. Don't laugh!!!!! I need boudoir tutorial 101 please. What exactly is it? I read in one of the posts, that its a work out. Could somebody please break it down to me, what exactly it is, and what you need to do for it, and how do you find a photographer to do it??? I looked it up on google, and it seems like pretty racy photos. It seems like something fun to do, but I don't know if I would be that comfortable.... anyway, looking forward to knowing the scoop on boudoir! Thanks!!

Re: For all of you boudoir girls....

  • Boudoir is, to me, sexy photos of yourself meant for your fiance/husband's viewing enjoyment, but really it's more for you.  It really is fun and can feel very empowering with the right photographer!  "Sexy" being a personal term, btw.  I know what my fiance thinks is "sexy" which may be different from what yours thinks is "sexy".  So what you see online may not be something you're comfortable with or even what your fiance would enjoy seeing.  Maybe it's a cute pair of pajamas or you wearing his football jersey or something.  Or it could be lingerie and even nudes/semi nudes.

I've had a lot of friends do boudoir after having a baby.  They have new curves they've never had before and maybe they're even feeling a bit self conscious about their new bodies.  Boudoir is a way for them to flaunt what they got while they have it.  In that case, they are doing boudoir for them.  Sure, their husbands got albums as gifts but, really, it was for them.

The first time I did boudoir it was for me.  I think I gave my ex a little album but actually stole it back shortly after and hid it because we were having problems.  But I wore a cute pair of matching plaid bras/undies (my call back to being from Northern Minnesota), a cute flashy white dress, and then a jean skirt, cowboy boots, a cowboy hat, and a bra.  I did it again when I got a little braver and did just a scarf and a skirt (the scarf covering my upper half) and some silhouettes nudes.  No one besides myself and my photographer have ever seen these pictures.  I did them after my separation to show to myself that I still had what it took to be single again.  :)  The third time I do them will be next week (!!!), and they are for my fiance and he will get the album on his birthday.  For that I'm wearing a red corset, a little school girl uniform, and will probably do some more silhouette nude (while I'm still thin from obsessively going to the gym to prepare for the wedding).

To find a photographer I'd ask your local board on TK here.  I'm sure many ladies in your area are doing them as they are getting extremely popular.  Someone will have a referral for you!  Or you can Google your town name + boudoir and probably find a handful.  I'd expect to spend about $250-600 to do boudoir, depending on the photographer and what's included.  I'm spending $350 and it includes and album.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • Ditto. I'm interested to hear the responses! I thought about doing these as well and I know FI would LOVE it, but I'm not sure I fully understand either.
  • Oh, and how it's a workout... you kind of contort your body into positions it's not naturally in (chest up, back bent, shoulders relaxed, stomach in, booty out), and you have to hold it for 20-30 seconds at a time.  Just try doing what I described above and you'll see how after doing that for an hour or two how sore you will be the next day!  I recommend a hot bath when you're done.

  • JC - Thanks!!! Your response was extremely informative! I'll have to look into it on the local board, or google it - like you said. I do like the idea of it.... my FI - soon to be husband - would be VERY surprised if I did do it for him, because it would be out of my comfort zone, so I think thats what he would like about it too. Like, "Wow, you did this for me?"

    Thanks again!!!!
  • I LOVE boudoir. If you've ever been into a Victoria's Secret, it's very similar to the photos you see up on the walls. It's not porn by any means. They're just sexy photos of you in minimal clothing. If done well, I think they're incredibly elegant and classy. They're usually done for a significant other, but I agree with PPs about it being for you too. It is very empowering and such a confident booster. Drinking a glass of wine or a mimosa during the shoot will definitely help lighten you up a bit. You could also bring a friend with you to help make it less awkward if you're around someone you don't know well. Which brings up another point, you want to make sure you have a photographer you can relax and feel comfortable around. Here in Arizona, there are quite a few "boudoir" photographers. I'm sure you can find some in your area. Finally, yes, it is a workout. When I did mine, she was constantly telling me to move this way and that way and I did struggle moving into some positions, which was surprising because I danced for so long and am flexible, but it got easier as the shoot went on. It was SO fun, totally worth it, I love the photos, and I think my fiance will also love them. I can't wait to give them to him! :)

  • I actually posted about this on Friday too...I decided to do them! I called my wedding photographer (he does boudoir too) and set up an appt for when FI is out of town.  The photog is coming to my house which is really easy for me.  I am having one of my BM come over to do my hair and hopefully she will stay to help with my nervousness...I am still on the fence about what to wear since i am a little self concious about my stomach.  I got a nighty type thing to wear and I am thinking an Eagles jersey or something sports related.  I am looking forward to it!
