NWR: Extreme Couponing

For everyone who told me about this show last night - I have TLC on in the background as I do paperwork, and just saw a commercial for it! Those ladies seem intense! I don't think I have what it takes to be an extreme coupon'er lol.

  • I know I don't have what it takes. I like being on TK way too damn much and clipping all those coupons would take me away from TK.

I haven't seen the show b/c we don't have cable, but I have seen stories about those ladies on the local news and what not.
  • Hah, I was just telling H I wanted to watch this show. I have a lot of free time, so I could possibly pull it off.
  • I could never do that. Although, maybe I should submit my dad for the show lol. He's a coupon freak. When I was taking care of him after a shoulder surgery, we went grocery shopping and it took us probably an hour and a half to get $100 worth of stuff because I had to keep checking what coupons he had. Granted, we got it all for about $30, but still, it was annoying for me after a while.

Spending up to 6 (or whatever) hours a day clipping coupons, no thanks.

  • I would love to do this.  I wouldn't have time now, but even just doing a little googling, you can find really good deals.  There are some sites that tell you about a deal, what week a coupon was in the paper and where it's on sale.

  • I know I don't have the patience for this. I used to go through the coupon sections of the paper when I was a kid but we would never remember to use them so it was pointless.

  • My thing is that usually coupons are for mostly canned goods and other processed foods. As we try to only shop the perimeter of the store - fresh veggies, meats, fruits, dairy, etc. - it just doesn't seem like we stand to save a lot. But then I have a coworker who says "well, we haven't paid for deodorant or toothpaste in over a year." Those are the things where I'm picky about products and don't mind paying the $2-4 once a month for what I want. Couponing just doesn't seem to be worth my time.

  • I wouldn't call myself "extreme" but I do love my coupons! On average I save 50% every week off my grocery bill using coupons. I don't know how those extreme people get $600 worth of groceries for like $3 or whatever! That is crazy!
  • I get the sunday paper pretty much for the coupons.  I clip the ones for products I use and/or would like to use and put them in a file box.  I used to separate them by grocery department, but that took too long so now I just have one large stack of coupons in the first section.  On Saturday or Sunday I plan my menu for the week, sometimes using meat specials at the grocery store and make a list of what I need.  Then I go through my coupons and pull any that apply, trash any that have expired, and check the ones that expire in the next week to see if it's something I should buy "because I have a coupon" or if I don't need it and should toss the coupon. I take my list and my chosen coupons to the store...
I save enough through coupons to make the newspaper subscription worthwhile, but not anything to write home about.
  • i did just learn today that you can use both a manufactures coupon and a store coupon for the same item.  even bigger bonus if it's on sale :)

  • I've watched one episode of this.  Of the 4 people profiled, three talked about the high they get from it, how they still get the high when they go into their storeroom and see all that they have bought.  The announcer even says how they won't have to buy such and such for x years.  Uuuummmm won't the majority of it expire before that date?  It shows an addiction among these people.  There was  only one person who bought only stuff that they actually used, rotated her stock to always use the oldest stuff first.  She started when her husband lost his job and they had to cut back expenses.
  • Couponing is super easy! I have gotten free jeans, free pet products, free bridal magazines, etc. Jena the one person you mentioned from the show actually runs her own website. If you're interested in starting I suggest googling Krazy coupon lady. That is a very easy website to use and will get you started. They do most of the research so you just print and shop. It cuts down a lot of the time.
  • I agree that for some of the people on the show this is an addiction and they buy far more than what they need just because they get a kick out of it.  I know my house isn't big enough to store so many products!  I find the coupons disappointing because generally they are for cleaning products and other items that I don't buy frequently.  And at least in my area, most of the stores won't allow you to double coupons or combine offers so I wonder where some of the people on the show shop, where they can get away with it?
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • The commercials make me want to cry whenever I see them. If you do the coupons correctly and are not a complete b-tch about them, I don't mind doing as many coupons as you like and double checking the ones that don't work. But there are some people who don't read the coupon completely and get SO angry at you for not accepting it....

  • My first job was as a cashier at a store...I HATED when people would come in with hundreds of coupons because most of the time they were expired, for the wrong product, etc.  I spent almost two hours just ringing someone up once because for every wrong item they had, they'd just take off back into the store to get the right one. I had to close my lane, miss my lunch and stay late because some stupid woman wanted to save a grand total of $15 on her $300 grocery bill.  She did that every time she came in and it pissed me off to no end.

I think that experience has turned me off of coupons, not to mention that everytime I do look, they are for products I don't even use.  I'd rather pay full price than to waste my time looking for coupons and pissing everyone off at the store.

I do like Groupon and Living Social though.  LOL.  That's about all I use.

Yep, this exactly. I just have no interest now in being nit-picky with coupons. I don't want to be like the awful customers I get at the store sometimes.

Some women do it really well though and I'm normally impressed! They come in knowing exactly what they need for their coupons and normally get items while they're on sale too so they get big discounts. The best I've seen is a woman go from $80 to $8 using coupons!

</div><div>Yeah, couponers suck as a cashier. At this store I worked at when I was in high school, they had this policy where if you found an item past it's expiry date, you get a good one for free. We had this one woman who came in every couple of weeks and did it for EVERYTHING. She'd have $300 worth of stuff, and in order to ring it up, you had to ring up the expired item, rescan it to redeem it, write it down on a list and put a sticker on it, then scan the second of that item. I'm pretty sure it took me a good hour to do it, but hey, I guess it was worth it for her.</div>
  • I think there is a huge difference between people who are idiots and people who really know what they are doing.  You come across idiots in ALL jobs that deal with the public.  That's just how it is.  If every idiot I met at my job turned me off of something, I probably wouldn't ever be able to leave my house.

  • I just started trying to use coupons - we went grocery shopping yesterday and ended up saving $35 off our $180 bill.

  • I've always clipped coupons, but I just started actually paying attention to sales and stuff to pair the coupons up with, I think it's a lot of fun Nuggs.  There are a couple  helpful websites too

  • DH saw a commercial for that show and said "cool you can become an Extreme couponer when we moved to the states"...

    Umn, yeah,  no.

Will I use coupons once in a while? sure.  Extreme couponing? nope.

There are no coupons in the VI.  Every few sales at all at the grocery store.  It will be a treat to see how much we can save on our food bill when we move.

And that's why that was the only job I've ever had that I had to deal with the general public.  LOL.

These kind of situations always remind me of one of my favorite movie quotes, which is from Men in Black(surprisingly) because it's so true.... "a person is smart, people are dumb."  That's why I can't deal with 'people'.  ha ha.
