Recently Engaged!!

Hi! My name is Sarah  and I am recently engaged!
I am getting very stressed out about this wedding! i don't have anything done yet and I am deploying in two months. I am trying to get done as much as I can before I leave.

Any suggestions?
Are there any bridal shows coming up?
Any venue ideas?
What should I do first? there are so many sites saying so many different things!
Should I hire a planner?

Welcome and congrats!  It is a very stressful time right now, especially with being deployed.  Can you give us a few more details, like when and an approximate budget?  What area of town are you looking at?

The first thing I would do is set a guest list and a budget.  That way you know what size room you will need and how much you want to spend.  That alone can eliminate a lot of sites.  Book your reception and ceremony spot first, and then you can start with other vendors.  Photographer usually comes next, because they can only do one wedding per day.  Cake, florist, DJ, and others can wait a little longer since they can do more than one per day (and DJ companies usually have lots of people to choose from).

My own advice is to get a binder with clear sleeves in it.  Separate into sections, like venue, florist, photographer, etc.  That way, all of your info is together and it is perfect for holding contracts once you sign them.  It was a lifesaver for me!

If you think you'll feel better with a planner, go ahead and book one.  You have two months, and you can get a lot done in that time.  Oh, and I'm guessing since you're being deployed you are military, don't be afraid to ask for discounts!  Lots of places may not advertise them, but are happy to give military discounts.

    Again, congrats and welcome!

Congratulations!! I agree with all of the above. Set the date and contract a venue ASAP! Also, use this board to your advantage. There are so many great ideas from fellow brides and I've learned a ton just from reading posts. What part of town are you looking in to? I would suggest getting a planner, or at least someone to tie up all the loose ends in the last month, especially in your situation. I'm using Lindsey Dyan Events (lindseydyanevents.com) and I know a bunch of girls are also using her. There are also a bunch of other planners in the city. Good luck and just be proactive! Procrastination will just give you stress in the end, so try to avoid leaving things until the last minute!

i would do like they said and get a venue first. that way you def have where you're getting married and when.  then, i would get invites done and sent.  then, do dresses and tuxes. for dresses, you could get one  off the rack at bridal and formal or one of those types or at davids bridal, and skeffington's or something might be able to get tuxes quickly. :)

    congrats! and good luck!

Congrats and welcome!  We're a wealth of information covering just about every wedding topic immaginable.

Definitely bring up the military discount(s).  I know my officiant offers them for anyone on active duty.  And here's contact information for a new wedding planner (because she's just starting out she may be more reasonably priced than other established ones):  Michelle Kinne at   http://www.wix.com/bluedahliaevents/bluedahlia

Give us a holler if you have any questions (or just want a shoulder). And thanks from all of us for your service to our country.

Congratulations! The ladies on this board are so very helpful in answering questions and helping to find good vendors in your budget.

I found most of my vendors based on recommendations from these ladies and I couldn't have been happier with how our wedding turned out.

I echo Caseyanddizzles comments. The recommendations on here were very helpful for me as well.

I agree that you should decide your budget first and then get the venue booked. You wont really be able to do much planning unless you know how much you can spend so having your budget set first is key. Once you have your venue booked, then start booking everyone else. You will need vendors who are reliable and that you can communicate with via email since you will be doing much of your planning from afar (I assume anyway). Here are some that I worked with and can promise you are excellent:

    Steve Lyons Wedding Photography (www.lyonswedding.com)
    Marilyns Cakes (www.marilynscakes.com)
Sarah Cormier Professional Makeup Artistry (www.sarahcormier.com)
    Oakwood Designs (Florist) 513-469-2596
    Creative Afflairs (wedding coordinator) www.creativeafflairs.com

Whether or not to hire a wedding planner, I think, depends on the bride and your particular wedding.  I personally dont think its necessary because most venues have a person on site that coordinates and runs the show on the day of, and my preference was to do my own planning with my mom. However, given that you will be deployed and limited in your planning capabilities, it might be beneficial for you to just hire someone here to do most of the planning for you in advance.
