Dress Dilemma

I went dress shopping for my mom today, we think we found a dress for her (yay!). http://tinyurl.com/325fon6

While we were shopping for her, I made the mistake of trying a dress on. Now I've tried on 30+ dresses and had found anything that made me feel like a bride or was in my price range. My FMIL offered to make a dress for me, I took her up on her offer and we've bought a pattern but we haven't made any progress on the dress yet.

Well I tried a dress on today that made me feel like a bride, had the WOW! factor and an extremely good price. My mother, who will have to check with my father, has offered to pay for at least 1/2 of the dress if not all of it.

I don't know what to do!!!! Here is the dress:

Here are a few pictures of me in the dress, don't mind the dress was WAY too big on me.

Do you a link to the pattern of the dress FMIL is offering to make you? Has she bought any materials yet?

The dress is beautiful. I think if you are really thinking of getting this dress, you should talk to your FMIL and be honest. It's a lot of work to make a wedding dress. My mom made my prom dresses. I can't imagine a wedding dress!

If you love the dress, I say go for it.  There are an awful lot of horror stories out there from brides who had their dress custom-made, even by highly skilled seamstresses, and I'm typically of the mindset that you're better safe than sorry - especially for your wedding day!

Another option, if you think your FMIL will be okay with it, is to purchase this one and ask her to make the other dress anyway.  If the dress she makes comes out just the way you want it, you can always wear that one, and sell this dress later.

Good luck with your decision, you look beautiful in it!

Sorry I meant to include the link to the pattern. No, we haven't bought fabric yet. I'm going to talk to FI when I get home and see what he thinks of it.

I just feel so bad that I took her up on her offer and now I've found a dress that I love.

I'd go with the ready-made dress. I'd be too nervous unless my FMIL was Vera Wang to have anyone make a dress for me. She may be relieved to not have that responsibility, too. Just say you weren't even planning on getting a dress but you found this one and it was perfect in every way and you couldn't pass it up. She'll understand.

I love it and think it looks great on you, so you should get it.  I would hope that your FMIL will understand that you've just fallen in love with this dress and it has nothing to do with your confidence in her abilities.
Is there someting else she could make so she still feels like she's contributing?

It looks amazing on you! (too big and all haha) I say go for it! I'm sure your FMIL will understand and really, she might even be relieved because its a lot of work! And I think Carly had a good idea asking her about contributing to something else. Can she make you a garter or a veil maybe?

Thanks ladies! I'm glad I'm not the only who would go with the ready-made dress. I really don't want to hurt her feelings but on the other had if I were to have her make what I really want it would cost as much as buying a dress. I just have to talk it out with FI and see what my parents are really willing to contribute.

I agree with Cg-pm and Arez- I think that if you love the dress, you should get it, but that asking her to make a veil would be a great idea!  :)

Yay! You found one!   It looks awesome on you!  I would go with that and ask her to make your veil or something.

That's a gorgeous dress!  FMIL will understand - if she's disappointed maybe speak to her about some of the other ideas the ladies had (or a rehearsal dinner dress) - but I'll bet she'll be relieved.

That dress is stunning - and it seems like you really, really love it!! If you feel like this is 'the one' then you should absolutely go with it. Like the other ladies said, I'm sure your FMIL will be understanding and may even be relieved. Having her contribute by making you something else would be a great way to still have her involved.

No fabric purchased? I say go for it! Having FMIL make the veil or rehearsal dinner dress is a great suggestion!

It looks awesome!  And if you love it.. go for it!

I agree with the other ladies, if you think she will feel bad, ask about a rehersal dinner dress.  I am sure she would understand.

    Good Luck!

Absoultely buy that dress!  Looks gorgeous on you.  Your FMIL will understand, (and may even be relieved to have the "pressure off").  Just thank her graciously and let her know asap.
